      Martinak State Park Campground

      Quiet camping in the woods.

This is a great little state park tucked away in the woods. Campsites are pretty spacious and have nice shade. The campground has two loops, each with a bathhouse located in the middle. Our site (Butterfly Loop #3) was long enough for our motorhome and tow car. The roads are paved, as was our camping pad. The only utility at our site was 30-amp electric. There are water spigots located throughout each loop and we were close enough to fill our water tank. For the most part, the park is big-rig friendly but we did brush against some trees on our way around the loop. Campsites do vary in length so make sure you include your length when booking. We reserved online and were instructed to just go to our site which was nice and convenient. They sell firewood onsite and have a self-pay station which we loved. There is a nice boat launch and the kayak launch has a platform to assist you getting in and out and there are plenty of places to fish from the bank. There is a nature center (which was not open during our stay), playground, picnic pavilions, amphitheater, The bathrooms could use some more attention. The shower curtains were pink meaning they have not been properly cleaned in a while. Needless to say, we did not shower there. The dump station was closed while we were there but we were told we could use the dump station at Tuckahoe State Park (about 10 miles away). We really enjoyed the short hiking trails and paved trail which allowed us to log about 3 miles without having to leave the park. The campground is a really relaxing place to be. We did drive (about 40 minutes south) to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, both of which we recommend.  It is also worth a drive to St. Michaels to see the quaint seaside town and visit the maritime museum (plan on spending half a day at the museum).  The only downside is that the park is not gated and open for day use so a lot of people just drive through the campground looking around.

      Tuckahoe State Park Campground

      meh

The campground is wooded and only has electric hookups available.  The sites are well spaced. The bathhouse is dated and was clean enough to use. There isn't much to do in the park but it was an ok jumping off point to visit St. Michaels. Good dump station and potable water fill.  Spigots throughout the campground.

      Martinak State Park Campground

      We’ll be back!

Great short camping trip for a quick weekend away. We stayed on the butterfly loop.

Cell service (T-Mobile) was spotty at times, bathhouses were fine, and the ranger was on patrol regularly. We felt very safe!

      Wonderful park! We’ll be back!

      Martinak State Park Campground

      Beautiful campground with cozy bathroom

I love this campground very much. I called the office book my reservation, the representative put me in Acorn loop.

When I arrived by the late evening, there are only two camper in a huge site. Then I drove to Butterfly loop, this site have much more peoples, some camper tell me, the Ranger will coming soon; finally the ranger help me move my site into the Butterfly loop. From my experience, better book campsite by yourself online, then you have an idea this site how many occupancy.

Did stay here after visting Vicksburg. Nice clean restrooms and showers. Friendly hostess and we had a nice shady spot, what was great with a heat of 94F.

      Tuckahoe State Park Campground

A Gem of a State Park

We were looking to explore Maryland's Eastern Shore and picked Tuckaho because they had electric sites available. We were so pleased with our stay. The campground is well maintained and the sites are great. We have a small travel trailer and our site was pretty level and nicely private. We backed up to a hiking trail which was nice. There's lots to do here. There's a disc golf course and the camp store has discs available to use. We've never played before but had a blast learning, now we're hooked. We also enjoyed kayaking on the lake. If you enjoy birding this park is great, we saw so many cool birds. There's an arboretum and horse riding trails. We will definitely be going back!

    Guide to Arnold

Despite extensive searching, horse campgrounds near Arnold, Maryland remain unavailable. The closest state parks and forests within 30-45 minutes of Arnold don't offer designated equestrian facilities or horse-friendly campsites. Campers seeking outdoor recreation can explore several alternatives with diverse amenities within reasonable driving distance from Arnold's coastal location along the Chesapeake Bay, where summer humidity and temperatures often reach into the 80s.

    What to do

Paddling and fishing: Tuckahoe State Park Campground offers excellent kayaking and river access. "We stayed on the tent side there is a kayak launch. The sites are laid out in a circle with the bathhouse in the center," notes Jessica K. The park provides water recreation options without equestrian facilities.

Disc golf: At Tuckahoe State Park Campground, visitors enjoy an established course. "There are a few trails here. Nearby is the Chesapeake bay with all its amenities, an Arbouretum that is a bit over priced. And access to the Tuckahoe River for fishing and kayaking," explains Bill G. The park provides outdoor activities beyond standard camping.

Wildlife viewing: Pohick Bay Campground offers birdwatching opportunities. "Eagles everywhere! Large clean sites. Great staff!" reports Kathie M. Though lacking equestrian facilities, the area provides nature observation opportunities.

    What campers like

Clean bathrooms: Camp Meade RV Park maintains quality facilities. "Nice clean restrooms and showers. Friendly hostess and we had a nice shady spot, what was great with a heat of 94F," shares Rick V. The park focuses on comfort rather than horse accommodations.

Privacy between sites: Martinak State Park Campground provides adequate spacing. "Sites do not have sewer but does have dump. Great park that offers alot!" notes Chris O. While no horseback riding trails exist, campers enjoy relative seclusion.

Forest setting: Cedarville State Forest offers wooded camping without equestrian options. "Small loop here accommodates both tent and RVs, which is fine but some of these damn things are so huge, I have trouble believing they could wedge themselves here," observes Bill G. The forest environment provides shade but no horse facilities.

    What you should know

Ticks are prevalent: Multiple parks report tick issues, especially Blackbird State Forest Campground. "My only beef is that it's a legitimate campground, which means, neighbors. But the neighbors aren't unreasonably close, so it's actually pretty good," explains D R. While searching for equestrian camping near Arnold, Maryland, be prepared for insects.

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate March through November. "Though I live in Texas now, Maryland will always be home for me. Whenever I get the chance to head back, I almost make sure to check out some of the local fishing spots," says Sam D. about Martinak State Park.

Limited amenities: Some sites have minimal services. "Each campsite features a picnic table or two, and a fire pit, plus one bundle of firewood. The ground is dirt covered with woodchips and sometimes evergreen needles -- pretty easy to sleep in a tent," notes D R. about Blackbird State Forest, which like other area campgrounds, lacks horse facilities.
