      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Susquehanna State Park Campground

A little noisy - park stuff, not campers

A beautiful, well maintained park with lots to do, great bathroom facilities and extremely nice people. The electric sites aren't all together, so you don't have RV's lined up but maybe annoying for folks who are tent camping. Avoid the locations in the mid-30's by the dumpster, both staff and campers start shaking the lid around 6:30. Between 5 AM and noon staff were driving big trucks and ATV's around with loud reverse horns, and slamming the fire pit grills, which they store sideways. Overall I had a really wonderful time, but that's largely down to good sound reduction inside the van. Almost zero cell service. I was able to get a couple of text messages in and out, but seemed to be a fluke.

      Ramblin' Pines

      Weak WiFi

For $90 per night the WiFi should work better. Didn’t connect at all. Had to use the antenna pointed East to get local Baltimore news.

      Cherry Hill Park

      My All Time Favorite…so far

This park is top notch. The grounds are immaculate. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a lovely gift shop. We were in the 400 sites and it was nice and shady. Though you are close to highways I don’t recall hearing and noise. I love that they have shuttles to DC., walking trails and a large dog park. This is my all time favorite park so far and I need to go back.

      Joint Base Andrews Military FamCamp

Could be a great campground but......

There are some good things about this Famcamp. It's like a diamond in the rough. If the military would spend some time and money on it, it could be a great campground. One of the greatest points about this campground is its location. You are so close to downtown D.C.! Every RV site (as far as I saw) was a level concrete pad. All sites, except for tent sites, have full electricity. Most sites have sewer and water. Sites 12-18 should be mainly used for the smaller travel trailers. I had an interesting time getting my 35' 5th wheel into the site. Even though I got my RV into the site, I don't have much room for my truck. My site has a picnic table, fire pit, and a grill. Everything is rusted beyond repair. My grill was filled with cigarette butts and my fire pit had trash in it. There is some shade. My site has two trees at the front of the pad on both sides of the RV. My bedroom stays nice and cold and I have a good view for my Starlink in the rear. The sites are close to each other, but there is some space. The good thing is that we are surrounded by the golf course. You don't get much noise from the base, because of the location, and because the FamCamp is surrounded by trees. You can hear the busy road outside the fence but I don't hear it much inside the RV. Every once in a while you'll hear an aircraft... but this is an air base, it's expected. We were told the community laundry was not working and to use the base laundry mat. Finally, one of the best parts about the campground, is the lady at outdoor rec that is in charge of the Famcamp. She is very nice and helpful. She will try to assist you with anything you need from directions to useful tips.

    Guide to Odenton

Campgrounds near Odenton, Maryland include several county and regional parks with both electric-only loops and full hookup options. Most locations operate seasonally from March through October, with limited winter availability. The terrain consists primarily of wooded sites with moderate privacy at mid-Atlantic elevations between 100-400 feet. Rainfall averages around 43 inches annually, creating occasional drainage challenges that campers should prepare for.

    What to do

Water activities at Susquehanna State Park: Located along the Susquehanna River, this park offers fishing opportunities and creek access. "We scared a bunch of deer (ok they scared me!!) and checked out the giant old growth trees, hiked over a bridge and stream which was full of fish I could see! Turned around after I got to the Susquehanna itself. The river was running pretty high and fast, pretty cool to see," notes one visitor to Susquehanna State Park Campground.

Disc golf courses: Bull Run Regional Park features a complete disc golf course as part of its amenities. A visitor mentioned that the "park has golf frisbe course, decent water park for kids, hiking trails, small creek/river you can explore." The course provides a recreational option for campers looking for activities beyond hiking and water sports.

Archery practice: Tuckahoe State Park Campground maintains an archery range for visitors. The park combines this with "20 miles of hiking trails are also open for biking and horseback riding," making it ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts. A camper noted, "There's an electric loop with electric hookup, but no water or sewer. Those can be found at the campground entrance."

    What campers like

Large, private sites: Ramblin' Pines offers spacious campsites with good separation. A reviewer shared, "Nice large sites with friendly staff. Lots of free activities for children and it's close to home." Another camper found the campground to be a "hidden gem" with sites "big enough for two tents."

Clean facilities: Little Bennett Campground receives consistent praise for maintenance. "The sites are quiet, very spacious, level, and heavily wooded with 50A service, water and sewer hookup," reports one camper. Another notes, "This is our second time here. This place is quiet the spaces are big. They can accommodate large campers, ours is 35 ft."

Access to DC: Washington DC / Capitol KOA serves as a practical base for exploring the capital. "We only spent three nights there. Staff was friendly and helpful with any information we needed... It was centrally located between Annapolis, Baltimore, and DC," shares a camper. Another reviewer explains, "We stopped at the DC KOA as a base to visit the Capitol."

    What you should know

Limited yurt availability: Yurt camping near Odenton, Maryland concentrates primarily at Tuckahoe State Park and the KOA locations. Reservations often fill 4-6 months in advance for peak season stays from May through September.

Seasonal considerations: Parks may restrict water access during colder months. A Pohick Bay Campground visitor mentions, "Stayed here for 2w while visiting friends in Alexandria. Took me 25-30m to get there so you are far away from bustle of city but not so far that going in to enjoy breakfast or the sights is a feat. Nice and quiet here during winter more so during week than weekends."

Variable site conditions: Many campgrounds have unlevel sites. One camper at Ramblin' Pines cautioned, "Check out your site before booking, some sites are steep but spacious." At Bull Run Regional Park, a visitor observed, "My site was very level, but I could see that some others were not so much, so you might want to ask about that."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: When booking at Susquehanna State Park, consider proximity to recreational areas. A camper reports, "It was most likely available because it was overrun with roots and rocks (no pad for the tent)- and you also couldn't see the playground from the site... This is great if you want to be away from the playground, as you can book one of the sites further off and not have kids running about."

Kid-friendly amenities: Bull Run Regional Park offers dedicated family programming. "The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish," explains one grandparent. "They had a campfire complete with s'mores followed by hayrides."

Bath facilities: Facilities vary significantly between parks. A parent at Bull Run shared, "The best review I can give us of the bathrooms. They're with staying again alone. Locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had. Only draw back is that there's only one playground that's awkwardly located."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Cherry Hill Park offers comprehensive services for larger rigs. A camper listed the advantages: "Pros: 50 amp hook-up, Water, Sewer, Playground, Mini Golf, Swimming Pool, Hot tub, Basketball court, Snack bar on site, Nightly hayride, Gated, On-site camp store, On-site bus shuttle."

Site dimensions: Many campgrounds have tight turning radiuses. At Tuckahoe State Park, an RVer cautioned, "I watched people with 25+ footers struggle to back into the sites. We booked site 21, blind. The web site does not say site 21 is extremely small. We have a 25' camper, and it barely fit, length and with were an issue."

Leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain throughout the region. A Little Bennett visitor shared, "D Loop is for RVs, A, B, C& E are tents only. AT&T 5 MB/s w/o booster(1 bar), 8 MB/s with it(2 bars). There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy."
