This free, first-come-first-served campground accommodates RVs, tents, and trailers on open terrain with mature trees scattered throughout the area. Managed by the US Forest Service within Kisatchie National Forest, Ahtus Melder Camp requires no reservations but charges a $5 Claiborne Trail access fee. The primitive site lacks facilities, operating on a pack-it-in, pack-it-out basis.
Road conditions deteriorate beyond the initial grassy loop, with concrete sections that may damage tires or axles according to recent visitors. The well-maintained open space provides ample room between camping spots, though muddy conditions develop after rain. Campers gain access to multiuse forest trails and can explore dog-friendly camping around Kisatchie National Forest throughout the surrounding district.
