Best Equestrian Camping near Versailles, KY

Kentucky Horse Park Campground accommodates horses near its extensive trail system, located just outside Lexington and approximately 30 minutes from Versailles. The campground provides water and electric hookups at all 260 campsites but does not offer designated horse corrals on the camping grounds. Tent and RV camping options are available with level sites and good shade coverage from mature trees. The campground connects directly to the Kentucky Horse Park facilities where horses can be stabled separately during events. Clean restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities support extended stays. Some sites in B loop experience drainage issues during heavy rains, while outer loop campsites offer views of horses in adjacent pastures. Sites are positioned on slightly rolling terrain but generally require minimal leveling for recreational vehicles.

Trail access directly from the campground connects riders to the Kentucky Horse Park trail system. Daily trail rides operate seasonally through the park's equestrian programs for visitors without their own horses. When planning extended stays with horses, campers should make arrangements with the Horse Park facilities separate from the campground reservation. The surrounding Lexington area offers additional riding opportunities within a short trailering distance. While the campground itself doesn't have dedicated horse facilities, its proximity to the Horse Park makes it a practical base for equestrians participating in events or wanting to explore the region's extensive bridle trails. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables, though the primitive camping area with electric hookups features grass parking rather than paved pads.

    Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet, bathrooms lacking.

We had a pretty decent time at Taylorsville Lake. The spots were spacious, and very nice picnic tables. We did a trail which was nice and went down to a boat ramp to see the lake. You can also rent boats there as well. The bathrooms in my opinion needed a major cleaning. They were nice just not very clean. We most likely won’t visit here again but was nice to hit a Kentucky campground. I have found that camping in Kentucky is much cheaper than in Indiana. Definitely worth a checkout.

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Great Place to Relax and Unwind

Over 250 full hookup sites, great shade, beautiful trees, good size lots, however, some are on a grade making leveling difficult. Electric and primitive sites available. Great for equestrian trailers, convenient location off Interstate and right next to Kentucky Horse Park. Bathhouse, game room, laundry, camp store available. Numerous playgrounds and basketball courts for the kiddos. Swimming pool and for the avid hikers a trail that takes you to downtown Lexington.

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Nice Campground Right between Lexington and Georgetown

I'll preface this with the fact that I am a Lexington, KY Native and have always lived close to the Kentucky Horse Park and Kentucky Horse Park Campground, but have never stayed there until this weekend.

We stayed on Loop A in site #38.

First, site #38 was a great large and fairly level site with 50AMP hookups and Water. There were no sewer hook ups, but the park has 2 dump stations that accommodate 2 RV/Trailers being dumped at one time. The site had a large amount of space between ourselves and our neighbors and we had a lot of extra space behind out paved site that was grassy. A great area for the kids/pets to run around.

The park has 2 playgrounds (one was closed due to COVID and the sanitizing that would have to be done. The park said they didn't have the staff to sanitize the playground further from the office/store). There is a community pool (it was closed because it isn't memorial day yet and the staff is still trying to determine if it will open this season after being closed all of 2020 due to COVID).

You're able to bring your Golf Cart if you would like but you must get a permit from the campground office/store. They say there is a rule that no one under the age of 16 or anyone without a valid drivers license is allowed to drive the golf carts, but this is clearly not enforced, as my kids were nearly run over (more than once) by young kids speeding around on the gold carts.

The park is great for bike riding and you can travel just a short distance to get to the Legacy Trail (a 12 mile paved trail great from biking/running that runs from the horse park into downtown Lexington). It rained most of the day on Saturday while we were there but in the evening, we got to get the bikes out and go see the horses as they were grazing in the fields.

Right next door, you have the World Famous Kentucky Horse Park. Their trail rides are back open (Ages 7 an older $25.00 per person) and they also have their Pony ride for kids 12 and under ($5 a person) opened back up. You can go visit the different barns, go to the museums, etc.

Just 1 exit north on I75 you have  a Camping World, for all of your camping needs and then 1 exit after that you have a Walmart and Lowes for other things. Many food options as well.

There is a gas station just down Iron Works pike for all of your fuel and and snack needs. Attached to the gas station is also a liquor store.

Your smack in the middle of Georgetown and Lexington which both offer several family friendly Craft Beer Breweries/Taprooms, a lot of great local eating options and bars/nightlife options.

On Holidays now, at the Horse Park Campground, you have to have 5 day minimum stay, which can get a bit pricey.

All around though, great little campsite with easy access to I65/I64.

    Clean and convenient

Clean bathrooms and sites, within easy walking distance to the Kentucky Horse Park. Pay attention to which site you pick- if you’re in c loop, it’s a long walk to the bathroom!

    Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground

    Peaceful, horse and fisherman friendly

Felt like we were the only people without a horse or a fishing pole! Great water for kayaking and beautiful sunsets.

Lots of raccoons in the area, so make sure your food is secure. Some of the sites are equestrian only, but they may give leeway. We reserved our primitive site ahead of time.

    Good weekend trip from Louisville.

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground, KY

Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm and educational center. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 the tours were unavailable when we visited. Regardless, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The sites were spacious and well maintained. They all come with a picnic table, fire pit and full hook-ups. The bathrooms, showers and laundry room were clean and also well maintained. The staff was friendly and accommodating. A great location, especially if planning to visit Lexington during your stay.

Guide to Versailles

Located about 30 minutes northwest of Versailles in Lexington, this equestrian-focused campground connects to an extensive trail system popular with horse enthusiasts. Riders appreciate access to varied terrain suitable for different experience levels, from beginner paths to more challenging routes.

What to do

Explore the trail system: Take advantage of the numerous riding paths at Kentucky Horse Park Campground. A visitor noted, "Taking the horses out here was a wonderful experience, it was great having so many different trails to go on in order to not only train the new horses how to trail ride, but also take the more experienced horses on tougher trails."

Visit the Horse Park facilities: The Kentucky Horse Park offers educational programs about horse breeds and history. "Right next-door to the Kentucky Horse Park, which is a must see. Very interesting museum and lots of barn with different types of horses in them to visit," reports one camper who purchased discounted admission tickets at the campground.

Take day trips to bourbon country: From Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground, located 45 minutes southwest of Versailles, visitors can easily access distillery tours. One camper shared, "We really enjoyed this park. Plenty of room for camper and car, big grass area and nice bathhouse. We visited multiple time. Decent place. We did parts of the bourbon trail and just enjoyed our time at the campsite."

What campers like

Well-spaced sites: At My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground, visitors appreciate the natural setting and site layout. "Smaller campground that has huge beautiful trees. sites are spaced out which has been really nice. Feels more like camping. Very shaded," according to one review.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathhouses and grounds. "Bathhouse is older but clean. Some sites have views of the golf course. Very friendly staff that works hard to maintain the grounds," notes a visitor to My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground.

Lake access for fishing: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground offers water recreation opportunities. A visitor mentioned, "We also fished one evening on Taylorsville Lake, though it was a drive from our campsite, so wish the campsites were closer to the lake!"

What you should know

Potential drainage issues: Some sites at Kentucky Horse Park Campground experience water problems during heavy rainfall. The outer loop sites generally have better drainage.

Limited staffing at some parks: Plan ahead for necessities like firewood. A camper at Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground reported, "The main overall issue is the lack of staffing. We got in shortly after 7PM and there was no ranger or staff to be found to get firewood. No honor system or anything so we had to venture out to find some."

Site leveling requirements: Many campgrounds in the region have uneven terrain. At Logan-Hubble County Park, a visitor noted, "Sort of basic campground, water, electric. Some low hanging branches a little challenge for bigger rigs."

Tips for camping with families

Choose sites near playgrounds: Many state parks offer recreational areas for children. A visitor to My Old Kentucky Home State Park said, "If you are looking for a place to take your children for a week or weekend of fun, My Old Kentucky Home State Park is your place. We stayed in spot 22 which is large and spacious."

Consider historic attractions: The region offers educational opportunities beyond camping. "We toured the My Old KY Home historic house and gardens with our kids (13 & 5) and everyone enjoyed it," shared one family.

Look for primitive camping options: Hideaway at Two Crane Lake offers more secluded tent camping opportunities approximately 40 minutes from Versailles. This option provides a more rustic experience for families wanting to focus on outdoor skills.

Tips from RVers

Check site specifications carefully: Horse-focused campgrounds often have unique layouts. "Very small campground and narrow roads. Many sites were not level and some sites were very short so make sure you review the site description. Also some had sewer hookups and others did not," advised an RV camper at My Old Kentucky Home State Park.

Bring leveling equipment: Prepare for uneven terrain at most equestrian campgrounds near Versailles. One camper recommended, "Make sure to have levelers to handle 7+ inches. Site 28 seems to be the best. Site 30 is also very nice."

Consider utility placement: At some campgrounds, hookups may be inconveniently located. A reviewer mentioned, "Sites are a bit uneven and water and electric is about 40 feet away," requiring longer hoses and cords than standard.
