    Matsell Bridge Natural Area

Nice little inexpensive primitive site... spaces almost always available

Nice quiet little primitive campground next to the Wapsipinicon River. Unfortunately, when I was there the last weekend of May, the gnats were bad, and the mosquitoes were just starting to gear up. HOWEVER, take bug spray and enjoy the rustic peacefulness of this "best kept secret" for primitive and inexpensive camping sites. Beautiful location, ranger close by, wood for sale just across the bridge, fire pits and picnic tables at every site. Good for RV, trailer or tent camping… level ground and lots of shade. Primitive bathrooms, no showers or running water.

Most cabin rentals in this area sit on terrain ranging from riverside locations to prairie settings within a 30-minute drive of Coralville.

What to do

Hiking trails along waterways: Matsell Bridge Natural Area features primitive camping near the Wapsipinicon River with excellent trail access. "Good campsite for a mellow weekend. When I visited we were the only campers there and it was awesome!" notes Ryan, highlighting the area's solitude potential.

Swimming and boating options: Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area Campground maintains an 8-mile hiking loop around its lake. A visitor explains, "There is a bit of elevation change and not many opportunities to 'bail out' so take water and pace yourself." The area supports kayaking and fishing throughout the warmer months.

Winter outdoor activities: Several parks maintain year-round cabin access with winter recreation nearby. Lake Iowa County Park supports cross-country skiing and winter wildlife viewing. As one visitor noted, "We had a blue jay that visited us regularly at our campsite, along with deer walking through."

What campers like

Natural settings with wildlife viewing: Lake Iowa County Park offers cabins with proximity to nature. A camper shared, "The area around the lake and nearby pond is not overly developed. There are wild raspberries and mulberries, lots of wildlife."

Clean facilities: Pinicon Ridge Park maintains modern shower facilities that receive consistent praise. "The new showers are amazing," reports Ashley S., while another visitor mentions, "The bathrooms and shower were very clean with lots of hot water."

Family-friendly amenities: Pinicon Ridge Park includes extensive playground areas. Chelsea D. states, "Our kids had more fun at this campground than any other so far. They have the most amazing playgrounds (yes, two of them!) That we've ever seen."

What you should know

Site terrain varies significantly: Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain requiring careful setup. At Beyonder Getaway at Sleepy Hollow, one camper noted, "Many RV's appeared to be seasonal campers... A downside was that the tent/grassy area was not flat. Worked okay for us, but would be an issue with a large tent."

Advance reservations necessary: Holiday weekends fill quickly at most locations, with many requiring minimum stays. One visitor reported, "At over $200 for three nights (which was required for a holiday weekend) you would expect this place to be nice."

Seasonal availability differs: Not all cabin options remain open year-round. Windmill Ridge Campground operates from April through November only, while both Lake Iowa County Park and Hannen County Park maintain year-round cabin availability.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some cabins offer superior kid-friendly amenities. At Pinicon Ridge Park, a reviewer mentioned, "There were activities for kids of all ages, and they used a rubber composite on the ground at the playground so when kiddos fall, they aren't injured."

Wildlife viewing spots: Select cabins for optimal wildlife sightings. One Lake Iowa visitor advised, "If you can try and get sites 67-70. They have beautiful views" with good wildlife spotting potential.

Swimming area quality: Palisades-Kepler State Park Campground provides family-friendly water access. "Great hiking & fishing! Lots of intense trails to explore but some trees were in the way due to a past storm. Close to cedar river for awesome fishing!" according to Danni J.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Prepare extra leveling equipment at many locations. At Little Bear Campground, a visitor noted, "Full hookups and showers. Even got a pool. Gas station nearby full of character."

Utility hookup access: Little Bear Campground provides convenient overnight options with full hookups. "Perfect for overnight camping. Very cute campground right off highway. I called while traveling and Mike was very accommodating," reported Todd C.

Proximity to highways: Several cabin rental locations offer easy interstate access. As one Little Bear Campground visitor noted, "Just off I-80 this was a clean, large, level, grassy tents site. Gas station right next door. Owner was very friendly and helpful."
