Best Dispersed Camping near Hamilton, IN

Dispersed camping near Hamilton, Indiana centers primarily around Chain O'Lakes State Park, which contrary to its listing, does not offer true free dispersed camping. The primitive camping areas within the park require a fee of $12 for tent sites, though they are sometimes incorrectly labeled as free in camping directories. Located approximately 25 miles northeast of Hamilton, this area provides rustic camping opportunities with minimal amenities and natural surroundings typical of Indiana's northern lake country.

Access to Chain O'Lakes camping areas varies by site location. While most campsites are drive-in accessible, some require boat-in or walk-in access. The park includes both primitive sites and those with amenities such as electric hookups, water, and sewer connections for RVs. Fire rings and picnic tables are available at developed sites, but primitive areas have fewer amenities. Visitors should note that while the park data suggests fires are permitted, always check current fire regulations as restrictions may apply seasonally.

The camping experience at Chain O'Lakes features level sites suitable for tents, RVs, and even some cabin options. The area's chain of lakes creates a unique environment for paddling and fishing. According to reviews, the campground community tends to be neighborly: "Everyone remained respectful of the noise and helped each other as much as we could." Another camper noted simply that the area offers "great camping level site." For those seeking true free dispersed camping, options are limited in this region of Indiana, with better opportunities found farther east in Ohio, where sites like the Delphos Section of the Buckeye Trail offer primitive camping with fire rings but no other amenities.

Delphos Section - Buckeye Trail (Points 18-19)

    On the trail respite

You're learning to backpack the Buckeye Trail, and you want to know where and how you can camp along the trail. This primitive site is located a short hop (.17 mile) off the trail adjacent to Hipp's Lock, part of the old Miami-Erie Canal towpath.  There's space enough for perhaps two tents, with metal fire ring, and plenty of deadfall for that small survival TV fire. The pond is filled with wildlife, and the tree frogs and bull frogs will lull you to sleep. Another Boy Scout project that benefits the Buckeye Trail. You'll need to Leave-No-Trace, as it's a primitive site, but it's a welcome respite from the road walking of this section.
