Free dispersed camping along a 2.2-mile gravel road in Hoosier National Forest, Berry Ridge Road gives drive-in campers roughly nine spread-out sites, some set back 100 feet or more from the road with dense tree cover in between. No reservations are required, and there's no fee. The road is gravel throughout, with sections that get steep and can become soft after rain, so larger rigs and RVs are not a good match for this area, especially in wet conditions.
Sites here are far enough apart that neighboring campfires and voices don't carry. Ax H. sums up the nighttime atmosphere as "just trees knocking, bugs curling and frogs croaking," which is a reasonable expectation. Several reviewers note that some sites are tucked into the tree line and easy to miss from the road, so it's worth driving slowly and scanning carefully before assuming a spot is vacant. Existing fire rings are in place at most sites, and previous campers often leave firewood behind. Cell service is reported as reliable, which is a practical bonus at a site this far from town.
Walking trails run through the surrounding forest, giving campers access to the wooded hills south of Brown County. Maines Pond and Sundance Lake Dispersed Camping are other nearby options within the forest for campers building a multi-stop itinerary. There's no running water on site, so bring everything you need. Trash service is listed, but carrying out your own waste is still good practice at dispersed sites.
Wildlife is present. At least one reviewer spotted a rattlesnake on the road, and nighttime rustling in the leaves is common. The sites are consistently described as clean, flat, and well-shaded. For campers staging a longer drive, such as the Chicago-to-Florida corridor, Berry Ridge Road works as an overnight stop without requiring advance planning. Arriving before dark makes it significantly easier to read the road and find an open site.
