If you are looking for solitude and peace in the forest, you will find it here! I went to the 2nd or 3rd site past the coordinates provided. It was very clean, flat, and had a nice fire pit. The sites are far enough apart that I truly felt like I had the woods all to myself! It stormed all night…that was a little scary, but the misty trees in the morning were magnificent!
I was late getting to my site due to being delayed by some bison in South Dakota, so I was racing the dark to set up my tent and start a fire. To my delight, I found that whoever was there before me had set up a nice bed of hay and kindling in the fire pit, which was very helpful! It was very peaceful and quiet…far enough from the highway that there was no noise or light pollution. The sheriff drove through once at night and once in the morning. I felt very safe.
First- the coordinates take you to the visitor center, which then allows you to drive through the park on your way to the campground. I highly recommend entering Sage Creek Campground into your GPS at the visitor center, because it was a very long and winding road after that! Or, if you're short on time, put Sage Creek Campground in from the highway and you'll get there a lot more quickly (but miss out on some spectacular views!). Second- the campground was full when I got there, but I'm glad I had this app/read the reviews. People were very accommodating and you really can just pick an open patch of grass if it's full when you get there. Even though it was full, it was reasonably quiet. And I got to see bison and prairie dogs up close and personal…so COOL!!
I had a bison run after my car on the way in…that was exciting! 😆 The road in had breathtaking scenery. The campsites were easily accessible near the trailheads. It was extremely quiet and peaceful the whole time I was there.
My site was gorgeous, looking out over the lake! The Campground was very clean and quiet. Vault toilet was well maintained. Swimming in the lake at the foot of a mountain was sublime.
The campground is in a city park. When I got there (8pm), there was a group having a cookout in the park and playing very loud music. They were gone by 10 though. There were street lamps throughout the campground (one right above my site) and I could hear highway noise all night long. The host was very kind and helpful.
My site was very secluded, peaceful, and beautiful! There were very few other campers (it was a Wednesday), so it was very quiet. The hostess was very helpful and informative. My stay was perfect! There are bear boxes at every site.
This place is a steal for the price they charge! I watched the sun rise over the ND badlands! The Campground was immaculate, the ranger on duty was super helpful, and I had the whole grounds to myself (it was on a Tuesday). 100% reccommend!!
