Sundance Lake sits within Hoosier National Forest, a small body of water surrounded by a handful of dispersed sites managed by the US Forest Service. No reservations, no fees. Campers simply show up, claim a spot if one is open, and stay up to 14 days. The sites are well-marked, with gravel pads for vehicles and open grass for tents, and cell service is available, which is not always a given in dispersed settings across Indiana.
The lake is close, but not right at the doorstep of the campsites. Reviewers note the water is a 5 to 10 minute walk from where most people set up, which catches some visitors off guard. Sites have existing fire rings and feel spacious. Trash has been reported at some sites, so packing out thoroughly matters here. Weekend use picks up noticeably, with more vehicle traffic through the area, including trucks that pass through regularly at night. Rigs larger than a small travel trailer will have difficulty navigating the access road.
Ogala Horse Camp sits just 0.4 miles southeast for campers who want a nearby alternative, and Maines Pond provides another water-adjacent option about 3 miles to the west. "Small lake nearby with what looks like some trails," notes julie, which points to some exploration potential beyond the campsite itself. Campers who value low-cost, low-structure camping with water nearby and room to spread out will find this spot worth the drive.
