Chippewa Campground — Kankakee River State Park

Heading Southwest for the winter. My first leg is at Chippewa Campground at Kankakee River State Park in Illinois. No hookups is $8 p/ night for a nice, large site with clean vault toilets, a dump station (free for campers), and potable water. They have walking and bike riding trails in the forest and along the river. It's a bit off the beaten path, and along a major road so there's a bit of noise if you're near the entrance, but the scenery is beautiful. Electric sites run around $20-25. The host is doing a great job keeping things clean and is nice and polite.

      Blackwell Family Campground

      Great Stay

Blackwell has clean bathrooms, offers hiking trails, boating (kayak rentals) or bring your own, fishing, archery, cycling. The gate locks at 7pm but you just call the night guard and he will let you in. They’re only open on Friday, Saturday and holidays. Would definitely stay again. Be aware Winfield Road has a lot of traffic so sites further away from that road are best. Heard coyotes about 3 am both mornings. Rangers were exceptional.

      Rolling Oaks Campground

Old-School Camping with a Whole Lot of Personality

Rolling Oaks is one of those wonderfully old-school Midwestern campgrounds that feels less like an RV resort and more like a little summer community that has been evolving for generations out here in the rich corn patches of central IL. Family-run since 1969, the sprawling, shady property sits along the Fox River with its very own lake and a decidedly RV-centric personality, where curb appeal is just as important (if not more) than the actual mobile confines people are living in. A substantial portion of the campground is occupied by long-term and seasonal residents, complete with patios, sheds and occasionally elaborate outdoor entertaining spaces, which gives Rolling Oaks an unusual neighborhood feel rather than the transient atmosphere of most CGs.

While my earlier review goes into considerably more detail, I thought I’d revisit this campground with a quick topline of HIGHS and LOWS along with a fresh batch of photos.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Water is the star here, with a swimming lake, pool and direct access to the Fox River making this particularly appealing if you bring kayaks, canoes or tubes; (2) Plenty of shade and a mixture of full-hookup, partial-hookup and pull-through RV sites plus tent camping accommodate just about every style of camper; (3) Playgrounds, volleyball, horseshoes and a game room give kids plenty to do without leaving the property; (4) Summer weekends have an almost throwback campground-community atmosphere with dancing, cart rides, farmers’ markets, spaghetti dinners, corn boils and pig roasts; and (5) Being only a few miles from the village of Sandwich makes supplies easy while putting you in prime position for the enormously popular Sandwich Fair (if you manage to time your stay here to coincide with this annual attraction).

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The large population of seasonal and long-term campers means portions of Rolling Oaks can feel more like a permanent RV neighborhood than a campground; (2) All that community activity means summer weekends aren't exactly designed for campers seeking solitude and P&Q; and (3) The CGs sprawling layout means the experience can vary considerably depending upon where you land with front sections feel busier and more transient, while areas farther back become increasingly more residential.

Insider’s Tip: For the best balance of scenery, shade and quiet, head toward the far side of the lake, away from the busiest weekend activity. And if you're thinking of bringing a kayak or canoe, definitely bring it as direct Fox River access is one of Rolling Oaks' biggest advantages.

      Happy Camping!

      Starved Rock Family Campground

Fantastic Family Campground Near Starved Rock!

We had a wonderful experience at Starved Rock Family Campground! This campground really goes above and beyond to make camping fun for the entire family. There were so many FREE activities for the kids, plus a pool, playgrounds, golf cart rentals, live music, family bingo, wagon rides, crafts, face painting and more.

The freeway traffic can be loud at night so ear plugs maybe helpful. Other than that, we had a great time and would absolutely stay again!

      Nature’s Way RV Park

Quiet spot that was perfect for a getaway

Took my daughter for the weekend. Camp host were wonderful and even worked with us when I arrived later then planned. Full hookup was perfect and location was great.

Location is close to Utica so we were able to enjoy the local shops and restaurants.

Wonderful spot and we will definitely be back.

      Love's RV Hookup-Hampshire IL 763

      Cross country travelers

Last minute online reservation...They only have. 4 or 5 RV sites...full hook ups...about $60+-...right near gas pumps but any noise did not bother us weary travelers...Only downside was showers were not included....For the price certainly an included shower should be part of the deal...easy check in and check out.,..We used the Love's site due to its location to visit family and the fact that electric was available...We have medical equipment that requires a recharge at night plus it's just nice to have the AC if needed.

      Escape to Nature

      Simply Lovely

We had a truly enjoyable stay and would’ve stayed an extra day if our travel schedule would’ve allowed. David was a wonderful host. Greeted us with a smile and escorted us to our site. We had our choice of 2 spots, both lovely. Picnic table and plenty of FREE firewood to keep us cozy. Wild turkeys roamed the grounds as well as the friendly ducks. All in all, a very peaceful evening and a special place.

Teal Bay Campground - Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area

The Family-Friendly Heart of Shabbona Lake

Canvasback Cove quickly felt like the liveliest corner of Shabbona Lake State Park, and it's EZ to see why so many families gravitate here. While one of three campgrounds within the park, Canvasback Cove sits closest to the playground, camp store, boat launch, fishing pond and lakeshore, making it wonderfully convenient for families with younger children who love having something to explore just a short walk from their campsite. The campsites offer electric and water hookups, picnic tables and fire rings, while the surrounding prairie, woodlands and sparkling lake create a peaceful backdrop that somehow balances activity with nature. One of my favorite memories was watching children race from the playground to the fishing pond with fishing poles nearly as tall as they were before proudly returning to camp to tell everyone about 'the one that almost got away.' Some campgrounds are designed around campsites; this one feels designed around childhood. From what we saw, lakefront Sites 117 and 125 are especially desirable thanks to their beautiful water views, while families wanting to stay close to the playground, camp store and boat launch will appreciate the heart of Canvasback Cove. We would absolutely recommend this campground for families because of its kid-friendly layout, outstanding park amenities and the countless opportunities to spend the day outdoors together.

Starved Rock Campground — Starved Rock State Park

Well kept grounds and beautiful state park

We had an easy after-hours first come first serve check in experience. Directions were easy to follow and the campground itself was well-kept. Having a power hook-up for a night was a huge plus.

The state park trails aren't really accessible from the campground but are a short drive away. They are doing A LOT of work on the trail system so not all trails are open at this time. Definitely check out some of the canyons and overlooks if you are staying in the campground.

    Guide to Joliet

RV camping near Joliet, Illinois offers access to several well-maintained sites within an hour's drive of the city. Located in the northeastern part of Illinois along the Des Plaines River, the area's flat terrain and four distinct seasons make year-round camping possible, though winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing from December through February. Most campgrounds in the region sit at elevations between 500-700 feet above sea level, with varying levels of tree cover and proximity to water features.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: The two lakes at Sycamore RV Resort offer catch and release fishing about 50 miles northwest of Joliet. "Beautiful spot, very peaceful. We've been here for 3 months. There are two lakes, catch and release fishing. A small beach with a snack shack," notes camper Deb M.

State park exploration: Several excellent state parks are within 30-45 minutes of the Joliet area camping sites. "If you are a hiker and looking for some trails to blaze, then check out either Starved Rock SP, which has more than 13 miles of hiking trails awaiting you, or better, the lesser known Matthiessen SP, which has 5-6 of fairly decent challenging, but completely isolated, non-touristy-laden trails," suggests a visitor to Nature's Way RV Park.

Swimming: Multiple campgrounds provide swimming options during summer months. "Clean campsite, clean showers & bathrooms!" reports Jeana K. about Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort, while another camper mentions Sycamore RV Resort has "a small beach with a snack shack" and "a nice beach for swimming."

    What campers like

Proximity to highways: Campers appreciate quick access to major routes for both overnight stays and longer visits. "Just 5 minutes to Starved Rock state park and one mile from interstate 80. Great country setting with full hook ups, pool, laundry, camp store and showers," writes Wendy T. about Nature's Way RV Park.

Family activities: Many campgrounds offer amenities for children and families. At Glenwood RV Resort, "there's quite a bit: horseshoe pits, catch & release pond, covered pavilions, kitchen, telephone area, shower/restroom facilities, game room, 2 kid's playground, trading post, swimming lake, in-ground pool and kid's pool with outdoor deck, tennis court, baseball diamond, volleyball and basketball court."

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention cleanliness as a positive feature. "Campground is very well maintained with gravel pads. Nice lake for fishing and a beach area for the kids to go swimming... Bathrooms are immaculate and are locked with electronic key cards," notes Marc W. about Sycamore RV Resort.

    What you should know

Seasonal water restrictions: Some campgrounds have limited water service in colder months. "Not a bad spot. Average and relatively inexpensive," says David N. about Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort, adding "No water before 4/15."

Train noise: Several campgrounds experience nearby train activity. James B. mentions about Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort: "Rail yard behind the row of trees. I believe they were humbling train all night long."

Minimum stay requirements: Check for stay requirements when planning. "Plan ahead! The location requires a 2 night stay minimum," advises Ann S. about Fox Bluff CottageS & RV.

Site quality varies: Campground surfaces range from grass to gravel to dirt. At Glenwood RV Resort, one camper noted "the powdery gravel sites (muddy when wet) that were not very level, and the long road in is very rough."

    Tips for camping with families

Halloween festivities: Consider scheduling October camping trips around special events. "They do an extremely large Halloween event Columbus Day weekend. Jam packed for this event. Awards for site decoration. Campsites set up haunted houses, candy for kids, drinks for adults. Fun to see adults and kids all dressed up," shares Lisa T. about Glenwood RV Resort.

Community amenities: Some campgrounds foster a sense of community. At Fox Bluff CottageS & RV, Gina H. reports, "We've developed quite a lovely community of really nice people. Personally, I love the view of the river. There's a gorgeous Creek, a lovely small lake and I really enjoy the walking trails."

Beach and pool options: For summer visits, prioritize sites with water recreation. "The new pool, the game room, the playground, the beautiful new bath house and the grounds are just wonderful," notes a camper at Fox Bluff Vacation Cottage & RV Resort.

    Tips from RVers

Budget options: For economical overnight RV stays near Chicago, consider alternatives to pricier parks. "Upon arrival you are greeted by the owner and staff. They are very friendly and escort you to your spot after check in," shares Brandy C. about Enchanted Shores RV Park & Campground, adding, "$20. Yes, it's an hour from the city, but I'd take the drive over the bill at a nearby hotel."

Parking assistance: Some campgrounds offer special help with RV parking. At Sycamore RV Resort, Marc W. advises, "When we arrive, the host will bring you to your site and just listen to his directions and he will get you into your site perfectly. I asked if I could bring him on my future trips. I've never parked so easily."

Love's Travel Center option: For overnight stays, Love's RV Hookup in Morris provides basic amenities. "While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the 5 most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience (EZ on- and off-access), safety & security, quality (of facilities), peace & quiet and amenities (either on-site or nearby)."
