Salmon Creek Camp on Loening Road

BLM's Salmon Field Office manages this dispersed site along the Salmon River, reached via a one-lane bridge off Highway 93 and a short dirt road. Road conditions matter here. A large mud puddle blocks the approach in early season, and four-wheel drive is recommended until drier months. Summer heat is a real factor at this elevation. Anglers and campers who want direct river access will find the site workable, though the first bridge on Loening Road is closed. Waddington Creek Primitive Campsite sits just northeast for those wanting a nearby alternative.

Nice quiet spot by the river

Only issue is a giant mud puddle to get back here. Would recommend 4 wheel drive. Might dry out later in the season.

Dugout

Beautiful little site on BLM land right next to the Salmon river. Fairly easy access, one lane bridge off Highway 93 and a short drive on dirt road to the site.

Siteit’s to the left after crossing the bridge. Short drive down a dirt road and there is a sign that says dug out to the left that takes you down to the site.

Does not appear to be easily accessible

The first bride is closed, and the second bridge is pretty narrow. I have a 16 foot camper, and didn’t feel comfortable crossing it. I couldn’t see anything across the river that looked like a good candidate for camping, other than a very overgrown depression with some sort of signage. It appeared to be right where the maps were trying to take me.

Hope someone else can visit it and shed some light, but it’s a no go for me!

Hot in the summer. There are some higher elevation spots a good ways down the highway.

Deer Gulch 20 minutes further down is decent, but still hot. Plenty of open space, though… and not too terrible of a bridge to cross. I saw a 30’ish foot fifth wheel that made it across… so… Deer Gulch spot is good.
