Rocky Ridge Lake Campground

Free dispersed camping along the historic Lolo Motorway (FR500) requires some planning before arrival. The road is not suitable for low-clearance vehicles, and early-season visitors should call the Lolo Pass Visitor Center at (208) 942-3113 to check conditions before heading out. One reviewer noted chainsaw work was still needed on the trail in mid-June, so timing matters. Pack in everything you need and pack out your garbage. No services beyond a fire pit, picnic table, and toilets are available on-site.

The lake is the central draw. Elk have been spotted on the hillside above the water, and at least one camper watched a cow moose feeding neck-deep in the lake, surfacing aquatic plants to eat. Crowd levels tend to stay low. The setting mixes forested terrain with open ridgeline above the water, giving campers sightlines toward the ridge. Nearby, Nee Me Poo NHT Trailhead Dispersed — Clearwater NF provides another dispersed option for those exploring the corridor, and Gass Creek Dispersed — Clearwater NF sits to the west for campers covering the area. Those planning a broader trip can browse campgrounds near Clearwater National Forest to fill out an itinerary.

Rocky Ridge Lake rewards campers who come prepared and self-sufficient.

Visitors consistently highlighted the beautiful mountain lake setting and peaceful atmosphere. Multiple campers noted excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including elk and moose sightings. Access requires high-clearance vehicles due to the historic Lolo Motorway location.

Absolutely stunning location

We visited here in mid June. This was a bit early and required some chainsaw use on FR500 trail. We were the only ones there except for a few day visitors. The lake and ridge above the lake are beautiful and definitely worth the trip. It’s a primitive campground with fire pit and picnic table. Plan to bring everything you need for your stay with you and pack out your garbage.

You can call the Lolo Pass Visitor Center at (208) 942-3113 to get updates on the status of the Lolo Motorway (FR500) before your trip.

Beautiful lake

There was a cow moose feeding in the lake when we were there. She would stomp around up to her neck in the lake, then eat the plants that would float to the surface.

Very secluded mountain lake camp

Great peaceful mountain lake setting with elk often on the hillside above located on the historic lolo motorway not suitable for low clearance vehicles but it is a beautiful place to go get away
