Portneuf Bend Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reservations are available at Portneuf Bend Campground, a private, drive-in facility in Lava Hot Springs running $25 to $55 per night with electric hookups for RVs up to 50 feet. The access road has a rough reputation among visitors, so drivers with larger rigs should plan accordingly. Sites sit on grass, are generally level, and the campground is well-maintained, though signage for navigating between sites can be unclear.

The Portneuf River runs directly through the campground. Anglers and tubers both make use of it, and a rental company on site provides tubes, side-by-sides, and other outdoor equipment. A small lake is also nearby, though fish sightings there have been limited based on visitor accounts. Shade is modest: there are some trees, but not enough canopy to block afternoon sun across the whole property.

Noise is a consistent factor here. Train traffic runs around the clock, with multiple trains per hour reported during overnight hours, particularly between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sites are close together, which means neighbor noise carries. Lance H. notes "not a lot of space between sites so you hear neighbors." Bathrooms receive consistent praise for cleanliness, and camp hosts are described as attentive. Portneuf Bend suits campers who prioritize river access and hookup availability over solitude, and who can sleep through train noise.

Many campers appreciated the well-maintained grassy sites and clean facilities, particularly the river access for floating. However, several visitors reported persistent train noise throughout the night that significantly disrupted sleep.

Hard to sleep

Campground is well maintained with lots of mature trees.

Signage could have been better to navigate to sites but the campground isn’t too big so you can make do.

The trains. All night long. They were loud and constant. Between 1am and 5am there were many that were every 20-30 minutes. Perhaps a site further away from the tracks would be better but we were closest to them and it was awful. (For the record, we live near train tracks and don’t mind the distant sound of trains through the night at home.) Obviously not the campgrounds fault but sleeping was rough.

My favorite campground in Lava Hot Springs!

The best part of this campground is the river! It runs right through the campground and it’s perfect for floating.

All the sites are grass which is very nice and cozy.

The bathrooms are always super clean. Camp hosts were nice and helpful.

They also have a rental company on site which was nice to rent tubes for the river. They also had side by sides and a whole bunch of fun outdoor toys.

100% recommend

So so

Pros: The site is well maintained. Only a few sites had muddy areas due to big rig tires but all were level with green grass. Toilets were well kept. It is close to town.

Cons: trains run 24/7 and are very loud. Not a lot of space between sites so you hear neighbors. View is okay but nothing great.

Great KOA like campground

A great little campground with many full hookups for RVs and some tent sites.  There is a small store in the office and a pretty little lake nearby but we didnt see any fish.  Lucky for the fisher though the Portneuf River is also right in the campground.  Theres a little bit of shade but not really any large trees.  If you want to head further up into the mountains this is a great spot to head north from.  It is also very close <5 minutes from Lava Hot Springs.
