A two-mile gravel road off the main highway separates Box Canyon Campground from the traffic corridor, pulling drivers down into forested terrain alongside the Snake River. The campground sits within Targhee National Forest and runs on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations, which means weekends fill quickly with a mix of tent campers, RVs, and trailers. Large rigs should note the size constraint: most sites accommodate 30 feet or less, with only one site reported to fit a 44-foot trailer.
Sites are gravel-padded, level, and spaced far enough apart that neighboring campers stay mostly out of view, with forest and groundcover filling the gaps between them. Reviewers consistently note how clean the pit toilets are kept, and an on-site camp host adds a layer of oversight that shows in the maintenance. No ATVs are permitted within the campground, which keeps ambient noise down. One practical note: site 9 catches light from a nearby restroom fixture at night.
The Box Canyon Trail connects directly from within the campground, following the Snake River in both directions. Anglers can fish from some sites, and people can be seen rafting and tubing the river during summer. The hike toward the hydroelectric dam, where the Buffalo River joins the Snake, draws walkers who want a destination. Cell service is available here, which reviewers flag as a rarity in the area, and Buffalo Run Campground and Henrys Fork RV Park are among the nearby alternatives for groups that don't find an open site. Arrive before midday on summer weekends to have the best selection.
