The road is ROUGH

Only knocking this slightly because the road really is very bad. Made it in my Crosstrek going no more than 6mph at any time😂 Gets super busy so get here early. Views are amazing and the area is close to Boulder so it's nice that it's not far from any necessities. Happy camping!💚

Amazing Mountain VIews, A Rough Road, and Great Site Spacing

*Note: Images DO NOT capture the true beauty of the scenery*

Pros: For a dispersed camping experience that's well maintained, I'd recommend Sugarloaf Road. There are several spots for tent placement, panoramic mountain views, a well put together fire pit that you can actually use, so much free firewood and kindling, shade trees, and the spacing between sites is awesome!  The area is generally quiet despite the occasional vehicle passing by. Something I was happy to have was moderate (2-3 bars) cell (T-Mobile) and WiFi (AT&T) service.

Cons: The bugs are giant.  Ants are the size of crickets and some of them fly, spiders are thriving, flies are flying, and some type of grasshopper or cricket can be heard around the clock.  They didn't disturb my camping experience too much, just a heads up.

The road turns into a rocky challenge pretty quickly.  High clearance would make life easier but I have a low clearance sedan that made it down towards the end of the road. I never went over 3 mph but I made it there and back without damage.

There is a mountain lion in the area and they warn to watch your kids and pets. You'll see the signs when you first enter. This is the first site in CO that I didn't see a "Bear Area" warning which was a nice change.

If you can get a spot, it's worth checking out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules and regulations for dispersed camping at Sugarloaf Mountain?

Dispersed camping at Sugarloaf Mountain allows campfires in the established fire pits. The area follows standard dispersed camping protocols, which typically include a 14-day stay limit. Campers should practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and use existing sites rather than creating new ones. The area gets very busy, so arriving early is recommended to secure a spot. Always check current fire restrictions before your trip, as these can change seasonally based on conditions.

How do I access Sugarloaf Road for dispersed camping?

Access to Sugarloaf Road Camp requires careful driving as the road conditions are very rough. Vehicles with higher clearance are recommended, though some passenger cars like Subaru Crosstreks can make it by driving extremely slowly (around 6 mph maximum). The road's challenging condition serves as a natural limiter for the types of vehicles that can reach the camping areas. Plan to arrive early in the day, especially during peak seasons, as the limited spots fill up quickly.

Where is Sugarloaf dispersed camping located in Colorado?

Sugarloaf Road Camp is located near Boulder, Colorado, offering panoramic mountain views in a dispersed camping setting. The campground is situated close enough to Boulder that campers can easily access city amenities when needed, while still enjoying a scenic mountain camping experience. The location provides beautiful vistas of the surrounding mountains, making it a popular spot for those wanting to explore the Boulder area while enjoying dispersed camping opportunities.

Are there designated campsites at Sugarloaf Campground?

While Sugarloaf Road Camp is a dispersed camping area rather than a developed campground, it does feature several established sites with well-built fire pits and cleared areas for tent placement. These spots are not officially designated or numbered sites, but they are recognizable camping locations that previous visitors have used. The sites offer excellent spots for tent setup and typically include stone fire rings. Remember that these spots are first-come, first-served, so early arrival is essential during busy periods.
