Russell Lake Wildlife Refuge

A gravel parking lot serves as the camping area at Russell Lake Wildlife Refuge, where self-contained campers can overnight within Colorado Parks & Wildlife's wetland preserve. The dispersed camping setup sits directly off the highway, providing easy access for large RVs with ample room to maneuver and turn around.

The flat, open layout accommodates any size rig, though campers should expect road noise from the adjacent highway. A vault toilet sits within the parking area, and trash bins help maintain the site's cleanliness that reviewers consistently note. Verizon cell service reaches the area due to its roadside location. The refuge features nature trails that wind along the wetlands, offering early morning birdwatching opportunities for those willing to rise with the dawn.

Views extend across the wetland habitat toward surrounding high desert landscape. As one camper noted, "there is also some nature trails along the wetlands so this is a great place to crash for the night and then go on a bird walk in the early morning." The location provides convenient highway access to Great Sand Dunes National Park, positioned about an hour's drive southeast. Campers exploring the broader region can find camping areas around Saguache for additional overnight options.

Bring everything needed for self-contained camping, as no hookups or fire pits are available on-site.

It’s a parking lot…

And signage says you can camp here so long as you’re “self contained”. I take this to mean, in your vehicle or a rooftop tent. No fire pits or anything like that, but there are pit toilets!
