Reaching Rainbow Hot Springs requires a 4.5 to 5 mile hike along the West Fork Trail through the Weminuche Wilderness, with river crossings aided by constructed bridges and some elevation change along the route. The trail passes through sections of burnt forest before arriving at the San Juan River corridor, where rock-stacked pools mark the springs. Camping spots sit directly at the springs, and water is available from the river with a filter. The site is free and managed by the US Forest Service. West Fork Campground gives campers a drive-in alternative a few miles down the road, and those staging from town can find camping near Pagosa Springs before heading out on the trail.
