    Overview

Heaton Bay Campground is situated at an elevation of 9,000 feet and centrally located for recreation and relaxation in the White River National Forest. There is little or no shade in the campground due to pine beetle infestation and the removal of hazard trees, but the sites offer open views to Dillon Reservoir and several mountain ranges.

    Recreation

Dillon Reservoir is 3,233 acres with 26.8 miles of shoreline, offering an ideal spot for fishing, boating, and sailing. The reservoir supports a healthy population of rainbow and brown trout, in addition to a few cutthroat finding their way into the lake from feeder streams. Opportunities for hiking and biking in this area include more than 7 paved miles of the 50-mile Summit County trail system. The Old Dillon Reservoir Trail is a favorite. This short, easy trail has spectacular views of the Tenmile Range and the Continental Divide. For those wanting a bit more solitude, hiking in the Ptarmigan Wilderness area is a wonderful escape from the crowds.

    Natural Features

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest is a place of serenity and adventure, boasting 8 wilderness areas, 4 defined seasons, and 10 peaks surpassing 14,000 feet in elevation. Wildlife in the area abounds. Bighorn sheep navigate rocky ridges and bull elk bugle at dusk. Scenic rivers sustain populations of cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Alpine regions provide habitat for pika and ptarmigan. These species, along with many others, depend on surrounding undeveloped wilderness, clean streams, and diverse forests to live.

    Nearby Attractions

Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain ski resorts are all located within 10 miles from Dillon Reservoir. These resorts stay open year round.

    Red Mountain RV Park

    RV camping in Kremmling

In Kremmling, the Red Mountain Lodge is a large RV campground with some cabins and motel rooms. It was a bit confusing trying to navigate the access roads in the campground as it was extremely large. However it had several amenities including a pool, free showers (that campers from outside of town can come use for a small fee), full hook-ups, access to the many off highway trails heading out of town (including trails that start in the campground), access to the Silverton Railroad Station (a few blocks away), jeep rentals, hot tub, rec center, laundry, and a playground. There is a SMALL tent area that is really just a grassy lawn between two of the rental units. The rental units are older and in need of some sprucing up (the paint on the exterior was peeling in large swaths). A short walk down the road takes you to some good restaurants as well as a microbrewery. Across the street is the grocery store/general store/post office, and a gas station is just down the road.

    Great RV Park w/ Amenities

Super nice park with great amenities, especially when your RV is winterized. Two indoor hot tubs and a pool, private showers & changing rooms, and laundry. Just wish there was a dish washing station. Multiple segments of the Colorado trail are accessible right from the park.

It’s not Glenwood but Silt has its charm

We loved near here for years so we were happy with the location. The campground is only a couple years old and has super clean, wonderful amenities and is very organized. Check in was a breeze, we have a beautiful site backing up to the river with full hookups. The splash pad, park, pool, hot tub and shower facility were all new and super clean. Wonderful facilities all around.

Highly recommend heading to miners claim for dinner on the free shuttle from the camp ground. We are here when we lived a few towns over a couple years back and it’s still one of the best choices around!

    Tiger Run RV Resort

Full Service Glamping close to Breck

Let's be clear - this is not camping. This is renting a driveway with access to power, water, sewer, internet, and cable. It is EXPENSIVE. It's also the only place near Breckenridge that offers all of these amenities.

The clubhouse offers a heated pool and hot tub, arcade, business center, locker rooms, laundry ($2 per wash / $1.75 to dry), and owners lounge. There are tennis/pickleball courts and a community fire pit in the center of the resort that hosted movie night during our stay.

No complaints about this place other than the fact that no one answered the phone at the office during our stay. The good news is that they email the gate code and wifi password ahead of time, so we were able to find our way to the site on our own.

    Elk Creek Campground

Beautiful, serene camping along creek (with new owners)

Not your typical asphalt RV parking lot. Rarely can you find a full hookup site in a natural setting along a roaring creek. The park has a variety of accommodations with full hookup sites, a “tent” section with electricity (lovely for small RVS as well) and log cabins. Many of the sites are along the creek as it meanders through the camp.

Location is great as well. Easy drive from I-70 but far enough to be out of town. Also a quick drive into Glenwood Springs.

New owners purchased park in April 2021 and are improving facilities while maintaining the natural feel. Check-in was easy even without reservations. The new owners are very friendly and welcoming.

Sylvan Lake Campground — Sylvan Lake State Park

    great spot for many activities

Slyvan Lake State Park is located outside of the Town of Eagle, CO. It takes about 20 minutes to drive from town to the park. Upon entering, there is a multitude of activities you can partake in. Besides camping, which i will get to in a second, Sylvan lake offers excellent fishing for trout, Stand up Paddle Boarding and Canoeing; Both which can be rented there. The surrounding area offers hiking and scenic drives.

As for the camping, there are a couple campgrounds in the Sylvan Lake area as well as cabins and yurts that can be rented. Camp grounds are standard forest service spots. The each feature a picnic table and metal fire rings. As always, spots range from small to large, some having ample tree coverage and some are very exposed. There are vault toilets in the are as well.

There is a fee to use these spots which can be paid via self service area. This is a great spot for a family or anyone looking to get away and stay active. The area can get very busy in the summer so try to avoid weekends. This summer (2018) there was a lot of construction in the park and in turn it closed down some area that were normally open for camping and activities.

Lovely little campground just off the Interstate

We spent a night here and were very pleasantly surprised by the facilities and the warm welcome from the staff.  The campsites are small in size, but very clean.  The creek running through the campground is beautiful.  We would cheerfully stop in again.  Very nice looking little cabins are available should you have forgotten your camping equipment.  But they do ask you to bring your own linens!

Long way up from town so don’t forget ice, etc. No shade, sites pretty small/ close. No electric but potable water from hydrant. Clean, hot showers for quarters, flush toilets. Cabins available to rent. Never saw/ heard from the camp hosts. Lovely lake, good trout fishing, nice trails. Few trees in campground but beautiful views on all sides. A little pricey for reservation, had to also buy daily park pass.

I haven't actually stayed here yet but it's on my list. I did have a picnic down by the river and walked the grounds. It's a nice quiet place and like I said I will be back to RV camp. They have water front sites for tent camping and rv hookups up the hill. The cabins looked really nice too! This campground is right on the glenwood canyon bike trail that goes all the way into glenwood springs! Will return and do recommend.

    Hidden gem, close to creek

This was a great find a few miles off Interstate 70.  The site we had was as close to the creek one could get and we enjoyed sitting out listening to the flowing water.

The camp managers, Dawn and Earl, went the extra mile to make our week enjoyable and checked in on us daily to see if we needed firewood or anything else.

They offer full hook ups, cabins, tent sites.  Small store on site with limited supply of camping goods.

Glenwood Springs is nearby.  Also not far to see some amazing water falls at Rifle Falls State Park.

    Line Shack Cabin

    Colorado’s best kept secrets

This hike/camping experience is one that you'll only know from being a local. The elevation gain about 2,000 ft. and the line shack is about 4.5 miles one way. It's open to XC skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.  This is also a hunting cabin too. First come, first serve.

The line shack sits on the top of the mountain or the end of the trail. It has a wood stove, bunk beds, and a very small kitchen. This is such a unique place with amazing views of the Gore Mountain Range and Beaver Creek ski area.  Know your route before you go and bring all the proper equiptment. Pack it in - pack it out!

    Nice for a KOA

We normally do not stay at KOA but this one was nice.  It is right by a truck stop and the highway so it was a little noisy.  There is also a train track nearby and a few trains went by.  The sites are close but they have full hookups.  The sites by the river are very nice and have covered patios.  The pool looked very inviting and they even have a water park for the kids.  The bathrooms/showers were very clean.  We only stayed for one night so we didn't have a chance to take advantage of any of the facilities.  The staff was very helpful and kind.  The cabins along the river looked really nice.  I would stay here again.

Sylvan Lake Campground — Sylvan Lake State Park

A cornucopia of glamping and camping options

This park has so much character that it should have it’s own tv show. There are conservation areas, trails galore, historical buildings, and a beautiful lake that is surrounded with alpine forests.

The staff is really sweet and willing to help in any way they can. We lost our pump for our inflatable and they found us one to borrow.

The campground is large and can accommodate a lot of campers, the bathrooms are fully equipped and clean. It was quiet at night which was surprising since you are basically in a cul-de-sac of tents and rv's. There are cabins and yurts to rent as well. They are even building (or just finished) a new section of a campground that looks like it will accommodate more rv’s and boats. It is called fisherman’s paradise.

There is also a day use area with grills and picnic tables.

The road to get out here can be rough in bad weather but low clearance is fine to get out here. WInter excursions are probably a bit tougher and would require an all wheel drive.

    Carbondale-Crystal River KOA

    Loved it!

This is a small KOA. The closet one to Aspen, which was our purpose in traveling to the area.

This campground has an old fashioned feel. They have cabins that look very retro, Actually only 20 RV sites, some of them on the Crystal River. A large group of tent sites & a teepee. I managed to get the last RV site for the dates I needed, so I was happy.

The river sites are the ones to try for. Saying that, sites 19 & 20 have a view of Mount Sopris. Sites 11-14 are long pull throughs & they didn't have much shade. It looked like sites 21-24 were used by employees.

The bathrooms & showers were clean. This KOA is next to Hwy 133, which can get loud. It does quiet down at night.

There's a laundry & a pool. There's no jumping pillow or dumb bikes. This is an old fashioned campground in that regard & I loved it! We camped at Carbondale/ Crystal River KOA Holiday in a Travel Trailer.

Sylvan Lake Campground — Sylvan Lake State Park

    Fantastic camp ground!

Beautiful 42 acre lake with great hiking path around it. Great for fishing, canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking, camping, snowshoeing around the lake, cross country skiing. You can rent cabins there as well as pitch your own tent. This summer, there is major construction on the dam there so activities are limited (summer 2018) but such a great spot. Pull through spots. 46 basic campsites, vault toilets & water taps available. Make sure to visit Eagle Ranch for great restaurants like 7 Hermits (microbrewery) & the Dusty Boot both of which often host live music. Check out great coffee houses like Yeti's Grind in downtown Eagle, EveryDay Outfitters & Cappie's Chic for awesome clothes, Pazzo's Pizza for great pizza, Dewey Dabbles in Art for fun pottery & art activities & the BackBowl for upscale bowling & food. Great ice cream at Grand Avenue Chill. Lots to do in Eagle - mountain biking is huge! Great public pool & ice rink in Eagle too. Too many hikes to list but wildflowers are stunning. Weather can change as it's at high altitude so bring fleece just in case, even in summer.

    Glenwood Canyon Resort

Near Perfection on the Colorado River

Wow! This is a beautiful spot. The lower campground is for tents and smaller RVs, but is definitely the spot to be if you can swing it! This campground has cabins, glamping tents, tent pads and spaces for RVs. We camped in spaces 17 and 18 in the lower campground right by the river. The “resorts has a rafting company, zip line, and restaurant/bar on premises.

    Pros:

    • Easy to access off of I-70, but you feel a million miles away
    • Gorgeous scenery all around
    • Very easy access to the bike/walk trail through Glenwood Canyon
    • 5 to 10 minute drive to Glenwood Springs attractions - Hot Springs, Gondola, downtown shopping a land restaurants

    Cons:

    • Spaces are EXTREMELY close together
    • The train runs by, which is very nice to see and experience as it runs through the canyon, but at 5 am, that sucker is LOUD
    • It’s a pricey campground, but could be worth it if you take advantage of all the amenities and it fits in your plans

Overall, this is a great campground. I might save it for a mid-week stay or slightly off season so you aren’t stacked on top of your neighbors.

    Glenwood Canyon Resort

    A splurge

After spending three nights in forest service campgrounds, we landed here, lucky to find a place with availability on a weekend in September (reservations made a month in advance). We opted for a riverfront RV site (#17) and we were right on the Colorado River, with the soothing white noise of the river putting us to sleep each night (interrupted only by the occasional LOUD train on the other side of the river).

This place has every kind of accommodation possible: (resort) cabins, cottages, glamping campsites, individual and group tent sites, and RV sites (some with full hook-ups, some with water and electric, some on the river, and some above it). The sites are laid out in typical RV park style, lined up like dominoes. This is not our typical preferred camping, but we were with friends, so we were able to create a little oasis between our sites.

The fire in August, Covid, and snow the first week of September essentially shut down all the extras this place has to offer– zip line, rock climbing wall, ropes course, and restaurant, so I cannot comment on these. But, Defiance Rafting is located on the property; while they were no longer able to offer rafting trips (due to potential rock slides resulting from fire damage), they did rent inflatable kayaks and we took advantage of this and had a rolling good time on the Colorado River!

The office staff is very nice and there is a small store in the office offering t-shirts, stickers, hats, etc. (but not food essentials). It is located about three miles from the town of Glenwood Springs and there is a trail leading from the resort that winds along the river to town. The trail east of the resort was still closed after the fire.

The bath/shower house was clean, but the shower set-up was funky in that there was no private area to undress/dress. The only other unpleasant thing was the odor emanating from what I would assume to be the waste/sewage facility and it was necessary to walk past it from the riverfront sites to the bathrooms. This and the price ($88 for a riverfront site) have me giving this place four stars instead of five, although I would consider staying here again if in the area.
