Within San Juan National Forest, Snowslide Campground sits along County Road 124 at 8,800 feet elevation, where La Plata Creek flows through the site. This Forest Service campground operates from Memorial Day through October with 13 first-come, first-served sites distributed on both sides of the road. The elevation brings cool nights even in summer, with temperatures dropping into the 40s while days reach around 80 degrees.
Sites vary from shaded spots under large trees to open areas with full sun exposure. Several sites sit directly alongside the creek, which campers describe as clear and cold. The campground includes fire grates, picnic tables, and pit toilets that reviewers consistently note for their cleanliness. A camp host is typically on-site selling firewood and providing information. RVs up to 35 feet can access the sites, though parking must fit within designated spurs with no overflow areas available.
The location draws wildlife, with visitors reporting red fox sightings and other forest animals. "Camp host Andrew was awesome, the pit toilets were cleaned Daily never once was there an odor," notes Greg R.. Weekend periods see heavier use, while weekdays remain lighter. Standard sites accommodate up to eight people at $22 per night, with senior discounts available.
For different terrain, Kroeger Campground offers an alternative just up the road.
