Along the banks of the Elk

Discovered an excellent dispersed site on 64 going east from Glen Eden. As soon as you reach BLM land there is a sign indicating Dispersed Camping on both sides of road. The south side has excellent sites along the fast paced Elk River and views of Mt. Zirkel. Ou site was nestled in the spruce and fur with small game chattering often.

Great Sand Dunes Dispersed

Unsuccessful in obtaining a campsite in Great Sand Dunes NP and discovered BLM land south of the park on Hwy 150, turn east between mile marker 3 & 4 at large sign indicating its ok to camp. Road goes a couple of miles for two wheel drive and further for 4WD. Numerous opportunities.

First to Review
Stone Cabin on Arkansas River

Dispersed sites on banks of Arkansas River, numerous sites popular with river runners in season. In September we had it to ourselves.

Nice river - Noisy road

Van camper: nice spot for the night enRoute to other adventures. River side sites and wide open sites, many are close and some 50 yards from highway.

Mountain Views

Van campers perspective: Turned off Hwy 145 onto Fall Creek Road because the roads name sounds cool and promising for a camping area down the road. Fortunately we ran into Wood Lake and found the campground host to be welcoming and helpful. We found a site amongst the aspen and enjoyed the light wind blowing thru. The sites had adequate spacing allowing for privacy (7 out of 10). A water canal on the upper area feeds the lake, a walk along the canal is beautiful with views of snow capped mountains. Unfortunately the roads were quite dusty making for some gritty situations, drive slow and respect fellow campers during dusty conditions. The campgrounds are at 9400’ providing aspiring views.

La Plata River Views

Van camper perspective: Beautiful campground near Mesa Verde located on the banks of the La Plata creek. The creek is clear and cold but refreshing on a hot day. The campgrounds is located on both sides of CR 124 with 13 sites total. We enjoyed a large riverside campsite at an elevation of 8’800’ with large trees for shade and privacy. The pit toilets were extremely clean. The camp host was informative. Plenty of firewood available and an evening fire helped take the chill off. Parked near the table, on the edge of creek, under a shade tree, doesn’t get much better.

Big Boondocking Area

Was exploring for a weekend campsite and turned north on hwy 485 just south of Jemez. After a few miles you get the opportunity to pass thru the Gilman Tunnels along the Jemez creek. For the next 11 miles there are numerous dispersed camping areas; however, vehicles are not allowed between road and river. After the 11 miles the river designation changes and becomes smaller. Continuing north there are countless opportunities for dispersed camping with sites on both sides of road. The road will eventually lead into Hwy 126 with several developed campground. The place we chose was about 4 miles south of Hwy 126, a large area designed to accommodate up to perhaps 40 sites. It was across from some tent rocks which also had a campsite. Cool area and especially good for large groups. Several large campers could make a weekend community here.

Jemez Mtns

This campground is a central and convenient location for visiting many of the local attractions, my favorite was Valles Caldera. Wooded area but sites were closer than we like. The trash cans were all locked (odd for June) and some bum left there trash at the locked dumpster.

Carson National Forest Campground

Small campground with some nice sites along the Columbine Creek prior to its entry into the Red River. Great creek access making for enjoyable moments sitting creekside. Beautiful area with the exception of the moly mine which is in process of restoration. Tall trees, big tables, fresh water, lots of shade, hiking trail, clean, informative host.

Bandelier National Monument

This campground has numerous sites and many were open during our visit. Juniper provides good shade and often privacy between sites. Clean sites with big tables and adequate space. Suspect wildlife in the area indicated by double locked bear proof trash containers. The campgrounds made us feel very comfortable with our location. Good showing of birds in the area. Conveniently located close to Bandelier National Monument

Life by the river

Great camping area along the San Juan with plenty of shade and privacy. Watched a fishermen catch plenty of trout with a fly rod. Chilled in chairs at rivers edge, crystal clear water, stream about 10 yards across. Tables and camping areas in great condition. Area free of trash. FCFS. About nine campsite (not sure on actual count). Dirt road about 1/4 mile away was no issue. We had three other occupied campsites.

Wild Rivers campgrounds

There are at least four established campground in the del Norte Wild Rivers Recreation area with La Junta being a walk-in and the others camping areas having the capability of parking really close to covered tables. Area is on the edge of the gorge overlooking the Rio Grande 800’ below or the Red River gorge about the same depth. Awesome views, adequate spacing between sites, visitor center, remote area, dark skies, private, arid area with small trees for shade. Hiking, rafting, horseback riding nearby.

Clayton Lake and Dinosaur Tracks

Van Camper perspective: Extra cool campsites with many in lightly wooded areas or tucked within boulders, or lakeside. Group sites available also. Adequate spacing between sites in most areas, some sites are secluded. Very clean area, the host picks up trash daily and even washes area around the covered tables. Lake was a bit low, saw two bald eagles, lots of beautiful wild flowers in June. Interesting dinosaur tracks at spillway that were exposed after a flood removed a layer of dirt from the spillway, it’s half mile round trip hike. Clean toilets.
