Too Crowded!

Maroon Lake is a bucket list experience but if you can, dispersed camp at the end of Castle Creek Rd instead. Equally pretty, less crazy!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you RV camp at Maroon Lake Campground near Maroon Bells?

RV camping is not recommended at Maroon Lake Campground. The site is primarily designed for tent camping with limited space for larger vehicles. The narrow mountain roads leading to Maroon Bells also make RV access challenging. For RV accommodations, consider nearby alternatives such as campgrounds in Aspen or dispersed camping options that are more suitable for larger vehicles.

What amenities are available at Maroon Lake Campground?

Maroon Lake Campground offers basic amenities suitable for wilderness camping. The campground typically provides vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. There is no electricity, showers, or hook-ups available. Potable water may be available during peak season, but it's advisable to bring your own water supply. While the facilities are minimal, the spectacular setting with views of the Maroon Bells compensates for the rustic accommodations.

How do I make reservations for Maroon Lake Campground?

Reservations for Maroon Lake Campground can be made through Recreation.gov. During peak season (typically summer months), reservations are strongly recommended as this is an extremely popular destination due to its proximity to the iconic Maroon Bells. Book well in advance, especially for weekend stays, as spots fill quickly. The reservation window typically opens six months before the camping date. Contact the White River National Forest office for any special permit requirements.

When is Maroon Lake Campground open during the year?

Maroon Lake Campground typically operates seasonally from late May or early June through mid-October, weather permitting. The high elevation (approximately 9,500 feet) means snow can affect opening and closing dates each year. Summer is the prime season, with July and August offering the most reliable weather. Fall brings spectacular foliage, particularly in late September when the aspen trees turn golden. Always check with the Forest Service before planning your trip as mountain weather conditions can cause unexpected closures.
