Small rundown cg

This CG is on a long gravel road access and is a sort of rundown place. Many sites are overgrown and not maintained, every picnic table needs painting. One old pit toilet. No cell and lake is just going to be drained in summer. $16/$9 senior, CG host on site and run buy a pvt concession.

Beautiful place and so quiet!

The campground is in a kind of sad shape. Lots of rotting logs and tilted benches. Crowded even on opening weekend. Was windy, 31 degrees overnight in early June. Reservoir fishing was pretty abysmal. Snow still standing in the shade. Very few mosquitoes compared to later in the summer. Good vaulted toilets. No shower. Hand water pump for well water available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Big Creek Campground located on Grand Mesa?

Big Creek Campground is situated on Grand Mesa in Colorado, accessible via a long gravel road. The campground sits at a high elevation, as evidenced by the cool temperatures and occasional snow remaining in shaded areas even in early June. The remote location offers a true mountain camping experience on Grand Mesa, though visitors should be prepared for the rugged access road and higher elevation conditions.

What amenities are available at Big Creek Lake Campground?

Big Creek Lake Campground offers basic, rustic amenities. The campground features primitive campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, though many need maintenance. There's one old pit toilet serving the area. A campground host is typically on-site during the operating season. The fee is $16 per night with a discounted rate of $9 for seniors. No cell service is available in the area. The campground lacks modern conveniences like running water or electrical hookups.

How does Big Creek Campground compare to other campgrounds on Grand Mesa?

Big Creek Campground tends to be less developed and maintained compared to other Grand Mesa options. The sites are often overgrown with aging facilities including deteriorating logs, tilted benches, and picnic tables in need of painting. Despite its rustic condition, it can still get crowded during peak times. The campground is managed by a private concession with a host on site. Visitors seeking more amenities or better-maintained facilities might prefer other Grand Mesa campgrounds.

What recreational activities can you do at Big Creek Lake in Colorado?

Recreational activities at Big Creek Lake include fishing, though catch rates may be low and the lake is sometimes drained during summer months. The surrounding area offers hiking opportunities in the alpine environment of Grand Mesa. Wildlife viewing and photography are popular given the natural mountain setting. During early summer, there are relatively few mosquitoes compared to later in the season, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. The cooler temperatures (dropping to around 31°F overnight even in June) make it important to pack appropriate gear for any activities.
