Brite Lake Aquatic Recreation Area

Within Brite Lake Park, this county-managed campground sits 3 miles from Tehachapi in the Kern County mountains. The Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District operates the facility year-round, providing both RV sites with full hookups and tent camping areas. Six sites offer full hookups with 30-amp electrical service, while other spots provide electricity and water connections only.

Wind defines much of the camping experience here, with multiple campers noting consistent breezes across the exposed sites. The RV area offers less shade than the tent camping zones, where mature trees provide cover but come with their own challenges. "Bathrooms near RV sites were clean and nice," reports Charlotte R., though she notes ant problems in the tent area facilities. Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet and provide ample space between neighbors.

The lake itself restricts water contact, disappointing families expecting swimming opportunities. Fishing requires watercraft with trolling motors only, and several reviewers mention catching fish from the shore or boats. Deer, rabbits, and various bird species frequent the area, providing wildlife viewing from campsites. The location removes campers from highway noise, creating a quiet environment despite the persistent wind conditions.

Access involves dirt roads that become challenging when wet or muddy. Sites themselves often require leveling, and the approach road can feel rough for larger RVs. The facility operates on self-check-in after hours using entry codes. Spring and fall seasons offer more comfortable temperatures, as summer heat combines with limited shade in many areas. No reservations are accepted, requiring early arrival during busy periods.

For campers wanting more amenities and services, Tehachapi Mountain Park provides additional options 3 miles east.

Campers regularly cited the spacious sites and peaceful lakeside setting away from traffic noise. Several reviews noted friendly hosts and easy check-in, though site conditions vary with some dirt and uneven spots reported.

Peaceful and Quiet

We camped in our pop up camper at one of the water/electric sites from a Wednesday-Sunday. It was pretty quiet the entire time and we had a decent view of the lake once the other camper left at the site across the way. We just have one tree on our site, so I wish there were more, but it was fine. The bathrooms are meh, and it didn't seem like the shower was working in the women's restroom, but it's camping, so I don't usually expect a lot. At least they flushed and there are sinks with soap. There is a dump station and a playground on-site. You can't swim in the water, but it was still nice to take our chairs down and sit by the lake and watch the birds & ducks.

Fine stay

Stayed here for a night after a long drive. Sites are not level and muddy, lake is not swimable, but very quiet and away from the noise without being too out of the way. Self check in after hours is convenient

Good spot for a night stay

The spot seems beautiful and peaceful. I was just a little disappointed that they charge $35, but the restrooms were partially well-kept. I couldn’t use the shower in two women restrooms, but my brother had full on hot shower in the mens. There is not much to do, as you cannot bath in the lake and it’s bit windy. The host was super nice though and I always appreciate friendly people!!

Brite Lake is a Bright Spot

A little out of the way, but that’s a feature. Spread out spots so you’re not on top of your neighbor. Only 6 full hook ups with only 30 amp, not 50. Other spots have electricity and water only. Our spot has lots of ants. People I’ve dealt with here are very nice. Very beautiful location overlooking a lake. Far from the highway so no traffic noise that I’ve noticed.

Good for a one night stop

Not my favorite campground. Very windy, not able to go in the water which was a disappointment for our dogs. Each campsite had plenty of room. Bathrooms with showers. Not much to do around the campground but was enough to drive to town for a bite to eat. Check in was easy, used a code to enter. Never spoke with a campground host.

Brite Lake 👍

Brite Lake is a small lake but you can definitely catch some fish! You can camp right up to the water which was awesome! It does get a little windy at times but nothing too crazy 👍

Sweet spot during a dry, smokey time (Oct 2020)

We stayed during the pandemic and CA wildfires, so the lake was low and the amenities were deserted (e.g., bathroom with shower rough and no hot water). That said, we reserved in advance and had a large site for our RV under a huge shade tree; other full hook-up sites, while ample, looked much more exposed. We enjoyed watching the bunnies and squirrels from our camper window and ducks and birds on the lake.

Great spot near a lake.

The lake isn't that great. But they are improving their facility. Running water and restrooms are available. Spots available near the water

Great place to relax at!

We absolutely loved staying at Brite Lake. Probably best in spring and fall. Might be very hot in summer. 30 amp max limits AC. Spaces are large. Beautiful countryside. Deer, birds, fishing, etc.

Nice for fishing and an overnight stay

Location in Tehachapi, in the Kern Co mountains, be prepared for wind. There is a lot of dirt. A lot. Road leading in is bumpy. Roads to site are dirt and a little tricky.

Its my understanding that the local Park and Rec may possible be doing some much needed upgrades to the park.

Nice .. Not for kids so much

Our family stayed here for 2 nights. We enjoyed our time but the kids were disappointed they couldn't touch the water at the lake. I brought a small plastic pool for them to get wet in at our site because it was hot. They do not take reservations and they do fill up quickly so claim your spot early if you plan on going. Fishing is nice if you have a boat of some kind. The boat has to have a trolling motor only though. Not a whole lot of shade in the RV sites there is more shade in tent areas. Bathrooms near RV sites were clean and nice. Down by the tent sites not so much there were ants everywhere. We will probably stay here again as it is only 30 minutes from our house but we will bring our generator and stay near tent sites with shade.
