Mountain Valley RV Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Reservations are available year-round at Mountain Valley RV Park, a drive-in facility sitting at roughly 4,000 feet elevation in Tehachapi, California. Sites run $43 per night and accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, with water and electric hookups at each pad. Most sites are pull-throughs, which makes arrival and departure straightforward. One practical note before booking: reviewers flag rough road access on the way in, so drivers of larger rigs should plan accordingly and check conditions ahead of their stay.

The park sits adjacent to a glider strip, and that detail shapes the atmosphere in ways campers don't always expect. Tow planes begin pulling gliders into the air around 9 a.m., and several reviewers mention watching the flights become a highlight of their stay. Tom D. notes that booking a glider flight through the airport is possible when pilots and slots are available, though demand can fill up quickly. Views from the sites take in surrounding hills, wind turbines, and open sky. As one reviewer put it, "not too many places have trees, or grass, or a view, in the desert."

Facilities include a large restroom building with showers, a 24-hour laundry room, and a dump station. A few things to know: restrooms are locked between 10 p.m. and 7:30 a.m., which has frustrated early risers. WiFi requires a separate fee and is only available during cafe hours. Laundry machines use a pay-card system that has occasionally been out of cards, so a backup plan is worth having. Starlink and Verizon both reportedly work well on-site for those with their own connectivity.

The campground is a few miles from downtown Tehachapi, where campers can find restaurants and shops. Raven's Nest, located at the adjacent airport, serves lunch and has drawn positive mentions from multiple visitors. Flying J Travel Center — Tehachapi and Love's Travel Stop Tehachapi are both within a couple miles for fuel and supplies. Pets are allowed, though the designated dog area is a small unfenced lawn directly next to the airstrip, so leashes are essential throughout the stay.

Spring visits tend to get the most enthusiastic reviews, with songbirds active and glider traffic steady. Campers planning a one-night stop between the Bay Area and Las Vegas will find this a functional midpoint. Booking in advance is recommended, especially for larger rigs that need specific pull-through sites.

Great location

My husband and I reserved a spot here for 1 night and ended up extending it for 2 more days. The scenery is beautiful and the staff is extremely helpful. We loved the little town. Great food and shopping and train watching. I would highly recommend this Campground. It was very relaxing and I loved watching the gliders coming in and out.

Quiet Evenings Plus a Glider Airport

This was our second stay. Our first being back in 2007 - 2008. We stayed in the exact spot both times on the end of the back row with a great view of the airport.  It all has been covered here except for the great lunch the airport restaurant serves and the ability to book a glider flight.  If you have time and they have a pilot and time it is a fantastic flight. It is surreal to get pulled into the air, release the tow, and only hear the wind as you fly over the mountains searching and finding updrafts. Unfortunately, the two days we were there (Oct '24) they had NASA and the Air Force flying and were all booked up.

Decent for a quick stop

Grounds seem well kept, the gravel was raked at our site when we pulled in. Restrooms are ok, the issue was that the lock them up at 10:00pm and don’t open until 7:30am. It would be so simple to put a code lock on the doors. You have to pay for WiFi, and the laundry machines are paid for by using a credit card for pay cards and the machine was out of cards. The only way to use it was to create an account with some vendor online! In the morning there were planes taking off, towing gliders, which was interesting to watch

Quiet & relaxing spot

We needed somewhere to stay for one night as we were finishing up a cross-country drive. We loved how quiet the area was. The grounds are clean and well-kept. Starlink and Verizon service both work great here. Pet-friendly and lots of dogs around while we were here. No complaints!

Quiet park

Quiet park with views of windmills and mountains. There is a dump station not full hookups and WiFi is only available when the cafe is open. Great for a rest and recharge.

Fine for a one night stop

We stayed at this park for one night. Nice enough. Not a lot of privacy but the campsites were big enough, most were pull throughs. Laundry room, restrooms with showers and hook ups. Not much to do around the campground but close enough to town to get a bite to eat.

Just Okay

We stopped overnight here. Would not recommend more than that. Best thing - highway noise is minimal. Worst thing: bathrooms are locked between 10 pm and 7:30 am (not good for those of us with early mornings). The dog area is a very small lawn with no fencing so no off leash running - especially bcuz there’s a small plane airport next to the RV park with no fencing. Showers had hot water but wear your flip flops cuz the floor didn’t seem too clean.

Plan to return

Sites are right off runway for glider flying. We ended up extending stay from one night to four to watch air force cadet competition. Owners are very pleasant and helpful. Plan to return in the future and listen to the coyotes at night again. All sights are pull thru, bathroom and laundry well maintained. Airport a couple of hundred feet away has a restaurant on the grounds (did not try)

Sweet spot along the way

Mountain Valley RV park in Tehachapi, Ca is a nice mid-way stop between Las Vegas and the Bay area. We stayed here when we discovered our trailer was a bit too large to get into Tehachapi Mt State Park Campground. (Although this RV park isn’t that far from the state park where you could drive and do some day hikes.) Although Mt Valley RV Park is probably on few peoples list as a destination spot, my husband and I would consider coming back for the sheer peacefulness of the place. There is something embracing about the valley location at about 4000 ft elevation- with views of the surrounding hills, minimal road noise, mature trees, space between sites and lovely song birds the 3rd week of April when we were there. Not to mention, the gliders in the sky will mesmerize you since it’s located adjacent to a glider strip. Due to Covid the laundry and external restrooms were closed, and tent camping, which is normally accepted, was canceled for the time being. It’s definitely a place to consider if you’re passing through or plan to stay in Tehachapi ,CA.

Nice desert overnight option

Now that I’ve spent some time in the desert I can now say that this little rv park is a nice place. Not too many places have trees, or grass, or a view, in the desert. It’s quaint and clean. It made a perfect overnight stop for a bit of “civilization” on our long journey. This park is exactly as advertised. I will say there isn’t much to do or see within walking distance, but the town in just a few miles away.

Nice little stopover

This was a sweet little quiet RV park. We spent the night on a longer trip and were pleasantly surprised. The sites had water and electrical. There was a large clean bathroom and 24hr laundry room. There are mountain views and we saw a lovely sunset across the airfield. In the morning we walked over to the Raven's Nest for breakfast and watched the gliders take off starting around 9am. I also recommend Red House BBQ a few miles up the road if you are looking for lunch or dinner
