Best dry camping spots on the beach

Love this place - the views are unbeatable, rv spots are spacious with many being parallel to the beach. All spots in Nobi and Wyandot are dry camping unless you’re in the paved parking lot farther down, but you miss out on prime sunset hours and a spots aren’t as good in my opinion. There’s a dog beach a short walk away, public bathrooms, showers ($2), laundry facilities ($2wash), and right next to Harford Pier which is home to a great seafood market and Merseas restaurant for good eats next to Seals!

RV Camping on Historic Harford Wharf

This is an RV only campground in Avila Beach. Parking slots are spread along the road to Harford Warf (interesting history!) as well as some overflow spots (for now) up the hill. There is a shower/laundry house down the hill at the entrance to the Port. The best spot is on the point, but the spot is usually taken by regulars and full timers. The history of the town is fascinating- at one time it was home to a massive oil storage facility. It leaked from day one and polluted the soil. Then the oil tanks caught fire and burned for days. Eventually the entire town was either raised or moved while the polluted soil was excavated. The town today has only a few origional buildings that were stored while things were cleaned up.  The entrance to the nuclear power plant is in the middle of the RV park, so expect high traffic during shift changes. It is important to note that this is RV only. There is a nice shower house with laundry down near the wharf as well as a restaurant. There are also some really nice places to eat and shop in town. The beach near the point is dog friendly. In the late afternoon you can spot sea otters hanging out busting shells on their bellies in the kelp beds. There is a 14 day camping limit before you have to move your rig elsewhere before you can come back 24 hours later to start building to your 14 day limit again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the prices for camping at Port San Luis RV Campground?

Port San Luis RV Campground offers dry camping options at various price points depending on location. The premium spots on the point generally command higher rates due to their unobstructed ocean views. Sites along the road to Harford Wharf are typically more affordable. For full hookup options, there are paved parking lot sites available at different rates. Prices vary seasonally, so it's advisable to check the current rates when planning your trip by contacting the campground directly or visiting their official website.

How do I make reservations for camping in Avila Beach?

For Port San Luis RV Campground, reservations are recommended, especially for prime waterfront locations. The campground has different areas including Nobi and Wyandot sections. Secure your spot by calling their reservation line or booking through their official website. Advance booking is particularly important during peak seasons and weekends when this popular oceanfront destination fills quickly. For the best spots on the point, early reservations are essential as these premium locations offer spectacular views and are in high demand.

What reviews say about camping facilities in the Avila Beach area?

Port San Luis RV Campground offers impressive facilities despite its primarily dry camping setup. The campground features a shower and laundry house located near the entrance to the Port. RV spots are notably spacious, with many parallel to the beach providing excellent ocean views. The prime spots are located on the point, offering unmatched sunset vistas. While most sites in the Nobi and Wyandot sections lack hookups, their scenic positioning compensates for this limitation. For those requiring full hookups, the paved parking lot area provides these amenities, though these spots don't offer the same premium views as the waterfront locations.

What types of camping options are available near Avila Beach?

Port San Luis RV Campground caters exclusively to RV camping with no tent camping allowed. The campground offers several distinct camping areas: prime waterfront spots on the point, spaces spread along the road to Harford Wharf, and overflow spots up the hill. Most sites in the Nobi and Wyandot sections are dry camping (no hookups), while full hookup options are available in the paved parking lot area. Each location offers different advantages – waterfront sites provide stunning ocean views while the paved lot provides more amenities but less scenic positioning.
