Managed by the US Forest Service within Ozark National Forest, Bayou Bluff Point of Interest sits along the Illinois Bayou outside Hector, Arkansas, and has operated as a free, year-round site since October 2021. The upper loop is closed to camping and will be eliminated, leaving four drive-in sites on the lower loop, including a group site. No hookups are available, so this is fully primitive camping. The site is accessible via paved highway, making it easy to reach in a passenger vehicle, though the sites run small and reviewers consistently note they are not well-suited to RVs or trailers over 20 feet.
The lower loop includes vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire circles. A notable feature here is the stone shelters with rock fireplaces, which several visitors mention as useful for cooking and for camping in cooler weather. The walk down to the Illinois Bayou is easy from camp, though reaching the water for swimming involves a steep, rocky descent. Cell service is unreliable; AT&T users report no signal, and even signal boosters have not helped, though the town of Hector is close enough for a quick check-in if needed.
Fishing and hiking are the main draws. Trails run directly from the campground, and the surrounding area gives access to additional trailheads and dirt roads. As Kristina K. puts it, you can "hear the river right near the campsite." Nearby, Middle Fork Dispersed Site AR Ozarks provides an additional option for those who want more solitude. Pack out all trash, as no waste services are provided on site.
Description
Effective October 2021, Bayou Bluff became a Point of Interest. The fees are suspended for camping and day use and is now open all year. Upper loop is closed to camping and will be eliminated completely. Use of the vault toilet, large pavilion, three shelters, and a small pavilion will remain. The pavilions are managed on a first-come, first-service basis. Trash services are managed by visitors as "pack-it-in, pack-it-out," and Leave No Trace ethics are posted on information kiosks.
Active partner groups and volunteers are helping extend the life of the current amenities, excluding trash services.
