Established Camping

River Road

River Road, near Plainview, Arkansas, is a charming spot for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With sites that offer stunning views of the lake and easy access to fishing spots, it’s a great place to unwind and soak in nature.

The campground is equipped with picnic tables and pavilions at most sites, making it perfect for outdoor meals and gatherings. Visitors have mentioned that the facilities, while older, are generally well-kept, and the camp hosts are friendly and welcoming. One camper noted, “The camp seemed to be fairly empty each time we have visited,” which adds to the peaceful atmosphere.

For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, the nearby Nimrod Dam is worth a visit. You can walk along the dam and take in the sights, and if you’re looking to disconnect, you’ll find that cell service is spotty in the campground, allowing for a true escape from technology.

While the campground doesn’t have showers, the flush toilets and hot water in the shower house are appreciated by many. If you’re planning a trip, just remember to bring an extra hose for the water hookups, as they can be a bit tricky. Whether you’re camping in a tent or an RV, River Road offers a laid-back experience that’s hard to beat.

Nimrod Lake

Overview

River Road Campground sits along the shores of Fourche LaFave River and Nimrod Dam, cradled between Arkansas' Ouachita and Ozark Mountains. Visitors are greeted with shaded campsites, beautiful scenery and many outdoor recreation opportunities. Nimrod Lake provides the ideal spot to get away from it all, relax and enjoy yourself.

Recreation

Fishing is one of the most popular activities at the lake, with an abundance of crappie, largemouth bass, catfish and bream available. Boating, water skiing and tubing are also popular, with 11 boat ramps conveniently located around the lake, however, skiing and tubing are only allowed from the tip of Carden Point eastward toward the dam because areas west of there are too hazardous. Campers are likely to spot white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, bobwhite quail, squirrel, rabbit, fox, mink, black bear, dove and waterfowl in the area. Seasonal hunting is also permitted throughout the forested area around the lake, except in or near recreation areas.

Natural Features

Nimrod Dam was completed in 1942 as part of a comprehensive plan for flood control and development of water resources in the Fourche LaFave River. Although recreation was not part of the initial mission of the dam project, the lake and surrounding 21,000 acres of pristine land have now become a recreational oasis for outdoor enthusiasts.

Nearby Attractions

Nimrod Lake is conveniently located adjacent to State Highway 7, a National Scenic Byway and other nearby points of interest like Petit Jean State Park, Mount Nebo State Park and Hot Springs National Park.

Beautiful views

Campsite was overlooking the lake, there was a rocky area that was easy to walk down to fish at. Bathrooms were nearby but not in the best shape, campsite could use a little cleaning but overall we were super happy with our accommodations. Our campsite was pretty easy to find. They had a table with pavilion covering at most sites, another small table for storage/food prep, and it was a really reasonable price.

Great escape from technology

We found this campground and have been coming back as often as we can. There is no cell service in the campground but if you go up to the dam, we had anywhere from 3 to 5 bars of service. The campground is older but we loved it. The Nimrod Dam is worth a trip since you can walk on it and give it a pretty good look over. The camp seemed to be fairly empty each time we have visited so you don’t have to worry about dealing with other people which we loved. We definitely recommend this campground.

Nice and quiet

My wife and I have never stayed at a USACE campground, but we will certainly start looking for them. This campground was very well kept, the camp hosts were so sweet and welcoming and best of all, it was nice and quiet.

There is no sewer hook up but there is a dump station. All sites are shaded and MOST are well spread out to where you are not bumping into your neighbors. It is not a glamorous campground and it has obviously been there awhile. There is water hookups but it is set up oddly. Definitely bring extra hose to hook into the shared system.

Lastly, the shower house water is nice and hot and the flush toilets are nice to have. We will definitely be returning. Happy camping!
