Reaching the former Red Canyon Overlook Dispersed area required driving roughly 6 to 7 miles down FR 525 into Coconino National Forest, a stretch that filtered out the bulk of Sedona's day-use crowds and left those willing to commit to the drive with considerably more elbow room. The road itself was generally manageable for two-wheel-drive vehicles, though some sections toward the Honanki Heritage Site showed wash-out damage that added caution for lower-clearance rigs. Reviewers noted that even towed trailers made it through with the right setup.
Sites near the end of the road sat elevated above the surrounding terrain, giving campers open sightlines toward the red rock formations that define this part of Arizona. Juniper trees provided natural separation between sites. No facilities existed on-site, but the Palatki and Honanki Heritage Sites nearby offered vault toilets and water during posted hours. Fires were permitted on calm days unless otherwise posted, and T-Mobile users reported picking up two bars of 5G signal at the top of the hill.
The area drew a mix of campers, ATV riders, and OHV users, so the FR 525 corridor was rarely empty. Campers who pushed further toward the dead end found more separation. Al L. described the sites as "very private due to the juniper trees." Nearby dispersed alternatives such as Greasy Spoon Dispersed Area and Nolan Tank Large Dispersed Area remain active options worth considering for those still planning a trip to the corridor.
