89A USFS Dispersed Site

Off Highway 89A, a steep, rocky incline leads to this elevated dispersed camping area within Coconino National Forest. The climb requires four-wheel drive capability, as multiple campers note the bumpy, challenging ascent that shakes vehicles and cargo during the approach.

The elevated position provides expansive valley views to the west and red rock formations visible to the east. Al L. describes waking to "a hot air balloon landing in the valley below" that "flew so close I thought I could touch it." The sites themselves present leveling challenges, with uneven ground that often requires blocks or careful positioning. Limited space means only a handful of camping spots exist, and Sarah M. found the area "crowded" during her November visit.

Cell service runs minimal, with AT&T registering about half a bar of LTE coverage according to one reviewer. The area experiences rifle shots from the valley below, likely from hunters or target practice at a distance. Some sites offer partial shade from juniper trees, while others remain fully exposed. For campers exploring the broader region, this free site provides access to dispersed spots near Coconino National Forest and serves as a base for Sedona-area activities. The combination of challenging access and limited capacity means arriving with backup plans makes sense.

Amazing Views

This site is at the top of a steep, very bumpy incline, but the climb is worth the views! You definitely need 4-wheel drive to get here, and be willing to shake things up a bit. As the sun comes up you can see into the valley on the west, and as it sets you get a gorgeous glow of red rock rims in the east. The stars are bright and the night is cool. There has been a lot of rifle shots in the valley, hunters or target practice, a long way off.

Pretty view, crowded, rocky road

This spot had great views, but it was crowded and I was lucky I got a spot. The ascent up the hill was very rocky and could be tough for non 4x4 rigs. There’s only a hand full of spots so be aware.

The site I chose was also uneven and very narrow.

Great Spot

The site was large but only a portion could be used to level my truck. I had to use leveling blocks that stack and lock together so you can drive up onto them. To get the position I like for my solar I needed to raise the passenger side. It worked great. A little shade from a juniper tree and the world was all good. I woke up one morning to a hot air balloon landing in the valley below. It flew so close I thought I could touch it. AT&T was a solid 1/2 bar LTE. If you camp to be on your phone you’re doing it wrong 😂. JK. Enjoy the site
