Horsethief Basin Recreation Area offers a variety of recreational opportunities including: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, and OHV riding. Castle Creek Wilderness is located nearby, and Horsethief Cabin and Turney Gulch Group Campground are available by reservation. Day use sites and trails are open year-round; overnight accomodations are not available during the winter. Scroll down (below the recreation map) to learn more about these recreational opportunities. Note: Until further notice, use of a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for those who plan to visit recreation sites in Horsethief Basin.

Located near the meeting of the Gila and Agua Fria Rivers in the southwest Valley, the park includes seasonal wetland or riparian area during our winter and monsoon rains. The majority of the park remains pristine desert, very similar in appearance to the landscape seen by the first settlers and explorers. The Sierra Estrella range, or Star Mountains, was once within the Mexican border, and remained so until the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. We loved this park in the Arizona Desert. Close to everything, yet set up to feel like you're in your own little village. The amenities at this park are outstanding and the neighbors are super friendly. Sites are decent size! We loved the three pools, multiple hot tubs and modern showers and laundry rooms. Been going here over 6 years and I always look forward to my visits there in the Summer. They have 2 pools (one is heated), volleyball, darts, horseshoe, pool tables, hot tub, sauna, nature trails, a cafe open in the weekend, events and tons of other things going on. Most of the people there are permanent or semipermanent residents. It is a comfortable, family friendly community, although you it is rare you see children there. I highly recommend and will continue to bring guests to enjoy some Arizona sunbathing!
GuideWe stayed at this property from 12/28/2020 - 01/11/2020. This was our first experience with a TT/Encore property. The RV site we were assigned has a rock pad, was moderately spacious, level, in full sun, and a fire ring or picnic table was not provided. There was a pool, hot tub, lodge, pickleball, mini golf, shuffleboard, dog park, laundry and a fitness center on the grounds. The nearest grocery store was within 5 miles as well.

We stayed in the cabin and it was beautiful! There are parks or playgrounds for the little ones, the area was peaceful and clean, the cabins are clean and affordable, and it had the perfect amount of woods & wildlife. A family of dear would come to our cabin and graze each morning as I sat on my cabin porch with a cup of coffee. The staff is respectful and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay.

Large clean spots. All spots are fenced descent pool and small store if you need anything. We stayed in the loop near the entrance. Quite loud with all the cars coming and going. Marina for boat rentals with a shuttle to take you back and forth. Strong WiFi. Kids were able to zoom without any issues.

Scott and Kevin have a great piece of property they love To share! Located in a valley of the Bradshaw mountains just about and hour and a half from Phoenix, this is an awesome getaway- away from it all. I boondocked for a couple days and enjoyed the quiet solitude of the canyon, enjoyed hiking, and the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. It’s a rocky dirt road to get here, but my class C rv easily made it- and I’ve taken it in worse roads. Well worth the effort, give this place a try! thanks Kevin and Scott!

As compared to the Maricopa County Parks side, this has a little bit more party atmosphere, is less secluded, but you can almost always get at least a boondocking spot without a reservation. They also have large events here as well so check their calendar for the weekend you are wanting to go!
We keep a boat at Lake Pleasant and are part of the Arizona Yacht Club so we are up here all the time.
LegendWe have a 36’ Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed for just an overnight in late April. This is a big resort and comprised mostly of permanent residents with a central pull-through area for transients. The sites are gravel and fairly close together, but the CG is clean and“patrolled” frequently by folks on golf carts. If you’re a Class A or C towing, you’ll probably have to drop to to access the hookups, as they are at the back end of the pull-throughs, not toward the middle as they usually are.
AT&T coverage was quite good, with 2-3 Bars of 5G+ service and speeds up to 23 MB/s. The CG WiFi was pretty decent as well, with speeds up to 4 MB/s, but varied depending on congestion.

GuideWe decided to brave Lake Pleasant on a holiday weekend. We were delighted that the campground was clean, well maintained, and staffed with incredibly friendly and helpful folks. The hike to the marina provided its own entertainment and a chance to get ahold of some authentic KC BBQ.

Probably a really fun place to stay if you have an ATV. Those are buzzing around all over the place going to and coming from off-roading trails
GuideReserved 7 days at Lake Pleasant RV to get familiar with my new camper. Chose the dry site “Vista Point” and at first was a little weary but was pleasantly surprised how many others were doing the same. The views from my spot were pretty epic. Relaxed and fished off the shoreline. Going to have to revisit after doing more research on the fishing here. They do have port a pottys which were actually clean. The convenience store was a cool feature saving me from having to drive 20min to get some drinks. Dillons restaurant smelled delicious but I packed too much food to not cook it up. Didn’t really run into anyone not friendly or in a good mood. I’ll definitely be back here.

Spots are small and not much for scenic views, so wouldn’t be my first choice if you’re just looking for a quick camping trip and spending a lot of time at the site.

TravelerVery large park with many different levels of camping experiences. From dry camping to full on glamping ! I stayed at Vista Pt. Dry camp. The views were beautiful. I stayed 10 days and as a single women I felt very safe. Security makes it's rounds and you can't get into the park after leaving without your pass. The one thing I would mention the drive up to the PT is rather steep, but there were different sized rigs up there is it is doable. I didn't use the amenities as I was away most days visiting with my daughter who lives in the valley.

TravelerWell we stayed here for two nights and frankly I wasn’t very impressed. The Campground is really only for permanent residents, everyone else ends up in a dirt lot essentially. Nearest bathrooms were a bit of a hike, so were all amenities. We paid for water and electric. The noise level was crazy... especially as we have a pop-up. I guess they don’t really enforce quiet hours. We got in late and finding our campsite was hard in the dark if you’ve never been there before. Lots of bugs at night. Honestly you pay $50 a night just to be by a lake and for me it wasn’t worth it 🤷♀️.
