Mesquite Wash Dispersed

Mesquite Wash Recreation Area is a primitive dispersed camping area with minimal amenities. There are no developed facilities such as restrooms, water sources, trash services, or electrical hookups. Campers should come fully self-contained and prepared with all necessary supplies including plenty of water. The area offers flat ground suitable for camping, but you'll need to pack out all trash and waste. This is a true boondocking experience that requires campers to be self-sufficient.

Mesquite Wash Recreation Area is primarily popular for off-road vehicle activities, with the main area on the west side of the highway being frequently used by OHV enthusiasts. The surrounding desert landscape provides opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and stargazing. The area's proximity to Four Peaks also makes it a good basecamp for exploring the broader Tonto National Forest region. Visitors should be aware that this is a multi-use area where they might encounter various recreational users sharing the space.

Mesquite Wash Dispersed is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Fountain Hills, Arizona. To get there, follow the Bee Line Highway (State Route 87) past the Four Peaks turn off. Watch for the Mesquite Wash sign along the highway. The main camping area is situated on the west side of the highway. The entrance can be easy to miss, so drive carefully and keep an eye out for the sign. Note that the access road is rough and may require a vehicle with 4x4 capabilities, especially after weather events that can wash out the entrance road.

Camping is permitted at Mesquite Wash Recreation Area, which operates as a dispersed camping area on public land. There are no designated campsites, allowing campers to choose their own spot on the flat ground areas. Currently, there are no fees specifically for camping at Mesquite Wash, but a Tonto National Forest pass may be required for vehicle access. The area has experienced fire damage in the past, which may affect camping conditions. Before visiting, it's advisable to check with the Tonto National Forest office for current status, regulations, and any temporary restrictions.
