Off Highway 188 in the Tonto National Forest, Sycamore Creek Recreation Area provides free dispersed camping across multiple sites accessible by standard vehicles. The area sits just off the interstate with additional camping spots reached by continuing down a dirt road that shows signs of seasonal washouts.
Sites closer to the highway offer easier access but come with some road noise, while those further back provide more separation between campers with small shrubs and trees creating natural privacy screens. The access road works fine for vans and smaller RVs, though Chuck H. notes that "if you have a large rig or trailer, do not cross the arroyo as the access road has some washout spots." Several sites sit near the creek, and the area attracts ATV riders who use the surrounding terrain.
Cell service proves spotty despite some online reports suggesting otherwise. The area has established fire rings at many sites, though trash left by previous campers remains an ongoing issue that requires visitors to pack out more than they bring in. Some campers report encountering nudists in the area, particularly in the more secluded back sections. For those wanting developed amenities, Bartlett Reservoir offers a different camping experience with lake access.
