Great Overnight Camping Spot

Camped here 04/28/23 on a road trip across the U.S. and had an easy time getting a campsite. Road was decent enough for my 2WD car, but getting off the road into the campsites sometimes meant crossing a trench. Overall worked out and we left early the next morning after packing up the tent.

Dispersed Camping No Longer Allowed

In order to decrease the risk of wildfires, the city of Flagstaff has placed a ban on dispersed camping within a certain perimeter near the city and this site now falls within this banned zone. A friendly ranger was parked there to divert campers and help guide to other dispersed camping options

Gorgeous views with access to Walnut Canyon

Awesome grasslands with pinyon pines and juniper. Feels just like home. Plenty of space for all types of vehicles but def some 4x4 roads that take the above average camper to breath taking views. We got to watch the sunset and cast shadows over a snowy humphreys peak in April for my birthday. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Take care of your public lands and enjoy the road less traveled! Though I will note there is highway noise about 1 ish mile away, if you find our spot ;)

Check out Walnut Canyon as it is right down the road, absolutely gorgeous. Going down in the canyon is optional, but coming back up is mandatory.

Sunset Crater and Waputaki are about 30 mins away. A two fer park! Not super dog friendly but a nice scenic drive off the beaten path on your way to the Grand Canyon.

Snowed over, but looks great!

Unfortunately we hit some heavy snow in January and were unable to camp in walnut due to the road being full of snow. A lot of the disperse camping in the flagstaff area won’t be able to get to if there is substantial snow. Something to keep in mind. We will be back in the warmer months to give it a fair shake. Happy camping!

Great experience for dispersed camping with family

10-15 minutes from Walnut Canyon National Monument off a side dirt road. We are a family of 4 in a 26’ RV and were able to find a beautiful, private, remote spot on a Sunday with gorgeous trails to explore. Would absolutely come back and recommend!

Beautiful

A wide variety of sites... be with others or get into the real wild. In June wildfires in the area, have your alerts on and be in 'set' mode. Popped over here after being evacuated from coconino nf.

Some roads Def need 4x4... don't take the chance if your the faint of heart. A brave spirt can find an amazing spot.

Stay safe out there, be responsible with all fires! Follow posted rules, rules on county websites and common sense....;)

Cool spot in forest

We stayed here several days in April. It was a beautiful spot with some cool fungi. Kind of crowded when we went, but we found some privacy.

Easy access and cell service

Road in, once off pavement is bumpy but flat. Dozens of places to pull off and numerous camp spots. Forest doesn’t have the 75’ pine trees, but 30’ juniper and pinions are nice. Only about 10 minutes into Flagstaff. 3 out of 4 bars on my Verizon phone (who are these people with 5 bars-lol). My Winegard 360+ pulls in 4G fine, giving me wi-wi in the RV.

Good spot to sleep overnight or spend a couple nights

We are here now. Dirt road to the left heading in towards the Walnut Monument road from rt 40. Hard packed dirt road with spots all along on either side. Our 2wd Promaster made it no problem although I would be careful of the ruts on the sides of the dirt road. Quiet and plenty of space between spots. Great overnight spot 10 mins from rt 40

Great camping, but windy!

We stayed here for one night and it was awesome. Fantastic view of the mountains, and most sites are private!

The morning was very windy and we had to leave as it was getting pretty brutal

Quiet site with nice trails and good cell service

We stayed here for 3 nights in mid March. Lots of large spaces to pull off of from main road. Some of the spots were a bit muddy from the recent snowfall, but plenty with dry ground too. This spot had good cell service with Verizon and AT&T, nice hiking or biking trails, and was within walking distance of the national monument and Flagstaff. Would definitely stay here again!

Everything we needed!

My boyfriend and I love camping even in winter when it’s snowing. We were having the toughest time trying to find somewhere to camp during the winter in Flagstaff and we found this place! Open, free, surrounded by trees, you feel like you’re really camping even though it’s so easy and quick to get to the road. 10/10 recommend.

Beautiful

Our campsite was honestly much better than I expected. For free, this place is great. You could hear the road noises pretty well so if that bothers you then I probably wouldn’t recommend but I didn’t mind it. We had the perfect sunrise view + firewood and fire pit someone left us. If we are in the area again, we will be back.

Large Spots

There are large pull through spots and people seem to respect your camping space. Its a wash board about 500 feet in and it smooths out a bit after that. There is fair Tmobile signal here. Saw a humming bird multiple times. They will fly right up to you and stare at you. Nice breezes at night. Hot during the day. Trees everywhere. They seemed to have scooped out enough sand that you can get to the spaces near the road and wont get stuck. Very enjoyable and quiet.

Decent for beginners, amazing stargazzing

Just left this spot today after one night.

This place was fairly quiet, mininimal complaints! There are lots of areas to set your own car and tent as well.

The service road goes out quite a bit and you can pull into each branch line and see if you like the terrain.

Everyone kept to themselves and really heard others. It does appear though that this is a common spot for those who are living off the grid and or are homeless and living from their van / RV.

I set up my tent in this flat open area, there are rocks but there was no hiccups. I was new to the area and I was renting camping gear I found this place to be perfect to test out everything and the environment. I will say it does get really windy so make sure your tent hookups are proper. The wind helps keep the bugs away. It does get very cold at night, so bring extra layers!

The night sky was absolutely beautiful, there was not a cloud in the sky and I was able to see it all the night sky. It was absolutely littered with stars. For those who like stargazing and want an easy setup, this is the place for you. You will see dots among the stars which are other galaxies or distant stars in the milkyway

The only complaint that I had was that the highway was pretty close and you could hear all the trucks go through.

Great place to stay for the night or longer

Stopped here for the night and it worked out great. Seemed to be a decent amount of open spaces, so you aren’t to close to other people. Made it into our spot with our RV (26 foot) without much of an issue. There are some spots that can fit larger rigs, but my guess is those are harder to get. Would stay here again.

Nice

The campsite was accessible for my sedan style car which was great, roads were nice, location was accurate. So much trash (I had that as an expectation though for being so close to a college town.) I always bring extra bags to clean up after others, but it was almost like some spots people just came there to dump large things. I saw cows, elk, ravens, and deer. That was awesome! I was totally expecting to be surrounded by large pine trees but there weren't alot, it was more so high land desert scenery (still beautiful). Everyone around me was pretty quiet. I would go back! *** Also, I went on a Wednesday and most of the spots were taken up.

we pulled up pretty late, the place was pretty empty and was very spacious. however, we didn’t see any of the cool/pretty spots that others have posted photos of. i’m unsure if this is because we didn’t pull up to the right spot or if we didn’t stay long enough to explore. nice, but nothing exceptional from my experience.

Excellent Bare Necessities Campground

We found this site on The Dyrt while driving through Flagstaff looking for a simple place to pitch a tent and head out early in the morning. It was early March, so not quite peak season but the spaces were abundant and easy to navigate - just pull off the main roads and find a site. We arrived late at night which made actually locating a site rather difficult, but in the daytime the sites are easily spotted off of the main road.

The sites are car/RV accessible, but lack amenities.

A great bare essentials campsite with nice distant views of Flagstaff and open sky at night.
