Great bird watching

This place is really pretty and very easy to get hear. The camping is limited at the main viewing area but there is an overflow camping area which is very flat. During the winter months October to march I think there are about 20000 Sandhills cranes super cool. It’s in an open valley with distant mountians all around.

Didn’t really find the site

Cant give my honest opinion since we were led to the overflow path not the actual entrance No one here it was nice and secluded however a lot of loose dirt that gets everywhere. There was a one way road that you can take I wouldn’t recommend 40ft Rv taking the small path. Only stopped to let the dogs out and have some leg time off leash. Dry during the time we were there.

Windy view of thousands of birds.

This is a pullout along the dirt road to see the cranes. There is a pit toilet and garbage. The area is filled with cars parking so you may have to wait to pull into an area to park. Great spot to see the Sandhill Cranes and other wildlife.

Sandhill Cranes are the main attraction.

I visited this place in early January, at this time there were hundreds of cranes I'm not sure when the prime viewing month is but you would not be disappointed in January. There is dispersed free camping in the parking loop. Just pull Up to one of the pipe enclosed picnic tables and set up. There is no drinkable water on the premises so B.Y.O.W There is an old pole barn just beyond the parking loop. It houses some Barn Owls. Turn to the right of the barn and walk toward the lake. It is quite a spectacular event to see and hear the cranes flying back to the lake to roost for the night. And leaving the lake in the early morning hours to feed in the fields. Lots of bird watchers and wildlife lovers come to witness this morning and evening.

January is particularly excellent for crane viewing, with hundreds of birds present. Spring also offers good wildlife observation opportunities with different species present. The summer months tend to be less popular for wildlife viewing as many migratory birds have departed. Plan your visit based on which wildlife species you're most interested in seeing.

What facilities are available for visitors at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area?

Facilities at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area are basic but functional. There are pit toilets available for visitors and garbage disposal options.
