R. Shaefer Heard Campground is a waterfront facility on the southern shore of West Point Lake, which spans parts of Alabama and Georgia. This man-made lake has 525 miles of shoreline that provide excellent opportunities for fishing, camping, boating and other recreational activities.

A dozen creeks and more than 40 square miles of lake provide plenty of good fishing spots for the thousands of anglers who fish here regularly. The lake abounds with bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Bank fishing is excellent at many locations, including public fishing piers at Hardley Creek, Rocky Point and McGee Bridge parks. Several trails wind along the lake and through the landscape, including the Lakeside Trail, which is perfect for mountain biking. A wildlife management area of nearly 10,000 acres, located at the upper end of the lake, provides habitat for many types of wildlife. This area offers excellent hunting opportunities.

At 9,049 acres, Georgia's largest state park is a hiker's and backpacker's haven. Many visitors are surprised to find rolling mountains 80 miles southeast of Atlanta. Above King's Gap is Dowdell's Knob where President Franklin D. Roosevelt sometimes picnicked and pondered world affairs. A life-size sculpture of the president now welcomes visitors to the overlook. Camping near Birmingham, South of Alexander City on Alabama Highway 128 you’ll find one of the largest state-owned campgrounds in the United States, Wind Creek State Park. However, that distinction is not the only thing that makes Wind Creek special. Wind Creek State Park is the public's access to Lake Martin. Wind Creek’s 1,445 scenic acres hug the shoreline of beautiful Lake Martin making the park an angler’s paradise. Crappie, bluegill and striped bass are just a few of the species the lake has to offer. Several fishing tournaments are scheduled at the park each year. For guests who prefer to stay in a camping cabin, the park has seven camping cabins to choose from, camping cabin 2 is handicap accessible. Each air conditioned cabin has a kitchenette and a private bathroom. Guests will need to bring their own bed linens, towels, cooking and eating utensils. The 39 premium campsite amenities include; water, sewer, 50/30/20 amp electrical, water front access, and TV service. Three of the newly renovated sites are handicap accessible. Bathhouse and playground facilities are conveniently located throughout the park. Separate from the above campsites we have an area restricted to equestrian camping. These 20 campsites are first come first serve and all have 30 amp electrical and water service.

Was a great location for us to visit friends. Best RV sites are those in purple...Long concrete pull thrus. Those in pink are very wooded, not very level and close together.
ScoutCampground is fairly large with lots of sites for RVs, a few Cabins, yurts, and even tent sites. There is a really nice and well maintained pool, hot tub, and splash area for small kids. The RV sites near the pool are concrete pads and well spaced out. The sites below the pool area are a little tighter and un-level and our lot was covered in ants. Since we arrived late at night we didn’t realize the amount of ants until we woke up to them crawling all over our camper. 30 amp circuit was not adequate. The breaker continually tripped while using small kitchen appliances. Other than that we had a great time and really appreciated the trash pickup twice a day and the Dollar General that was only a 1/4 mile down the road.

The campground is developed and maintained by the Corp of Engineers, so everything is well designed and maintained. The lots are hugh. most are on the water. Some sites are so private you’d think you are alone. The park is spread out so that each loop is so far from the others you can’t hear or see them. The roads are in great shape. One could rollerblade on the asphalt. You can swim, fish or boat right from your site. lots of hiking trails. The forest is very diverse, with lots of large oaks, pines, cedars, and more. not a single dead tree anywhere. Even in the loops that are most popular, the lots are 120 feet apart at least. There are pavilions on two of the loops that campers use.
The attendants were helpful and polite. We will bring our bikes next time. We walked several miles each day exploring. We’ve camped at Wind Creek State Park before and in comparison we liked this one better because the lots are much larger and you get more beach area per lot. The showers are typical state park showers, no complaints. The place is very clean, no trash, limbs or clutter. the grass is kept trimmed. There were tennis courts and a basket ball court if one desires. The park is right on the Alabama/Georgia line, in Alabama but on Eastern time, a little weird. There are 30 and 50 amp lots with water but no sewer, but with a dumping station. we noticed most folks had the portable sewer tanks. we value privacy, but if you want to camp in groups there are loops that accomidate that well. We will go back for sure.
We use AT&T and got two bars at our site, which allowed us to stream Netflix with no buffering.
LegendThis park is so pretty! We had buddy sites and we had so much space. We sat outside all the time. Nice breeze coming off the lake. Kids loved going in the water. It was a little tricky getting in the spot because it was an odd angle, but it wasn’t horrible. We rode our bikes to the dam, which was pretty cool! The bathhouse can use some serious renovation. There are several toilet houses and only two shower houses. They’re older for sure and can use some serious help.
LegendWe can’t even get past the fact that this spot is only $30! COE outdid themselves with this park. Site was pretty level and only needed a few adjustments, but it’s so worth it. Private deck overlooking the lake with steps leading down to your private lake front and fire pit. Spacing from neighbors was decent as well. We’ll 100% be back to enjoy this park more.
LegendThe campground(CG) is fairly easy to get to as you follow the signs to West Point, Lake. Our RV GPS and Waze took us right to the West Point Project sign(per reservation email) that showed R. Shaefer Heard CG. Check-in at the gate was quick, and we proceeded to back-in site 106 with water and electric(50/30/20 AMP). The site entrance is lined with railroad ties, so we had to be precise with our backing. However, the road turns at the site, so you get a straight shot to back in. The reservation website states that the site is limited to a 30’ RV. We had zero problems fitting in, leveling, and parking our 39’ 5th wheel and F450. Site 106 is on the end of a row, so it has plenty of privacy, plus right on the lake. As with most COEs, the water pressure is very good, so we used a reducer. We got 2 bars on Verizon. There’s a clear shot south for satellite, and we were able to get a shot north through mature trees for Starlink. Our site was right on the water and would be an easy launch for a kayak. As we were here in early January, we pretty much had the loop to ourselves. The last time we were here was during warmer weather a couple of years ago, and this CG was pretty much full. We enjoyed walking our dogs along the CG roads. We enjoyed our two-day stay.
GuideThe campground is well maintained. Gorgeous lake, clean plots. The problem is the lack of privacy. Even their more private spots are still just kind of in the open. If you’re seeking seclusion, which most people are when they try and get away from the city, you won’t find it here. The public bathrooms are also less than desirable. Wet concrete floors and tile walls just makes it feel dirty. For what they charge, the bathrooms should be in far better shape across the grounds. The couple that runs the visiting booth are way too strict. They legitimately lock you into the grounds after 10pm… idk how that’s legal, but they do it.
GuideCampsites vary from forested and shaded to open and sunny. Most campsites offer lake views. Kayaks can be launched from some sites. Some sites are close together and others are spaced farther apart and offer more privacy. Restrooms and showers are spaced around the campground. I preferred the 17-39 section because it seemed more wooded.

GuideGreat, quiet park with lots of walking and biking trails nearby. All the sites are wooded and spaced out so you don’t have any issues with privacy. From what we could tell, all of the sites have direct lake access. We visited in July and because of the tree coverage, we were able to sit outside most of the day without getting too hot. This is definitely one of our new favorite parks!

GuideOlder facilities but the views make up for it. Water and power year round even in winter. Some spots are a little closer than others but most have woods in between so they are somewhat private. The lake is down right now because they are repairing the dam so it was fun to walk along the banks.
ScoutMy family and I camp here often! West point lake is a great place to fish, swim, and yes even boat, but what we enjoy the most about this place is that you can fully enjoy water skiing, Jett skiing, but you can also enjoy a nice paddle in a kayak or canoe, it is never over crowded and it's numerous coves make for pretty safe swimming and shoreline fishing.
The campground is run by the Army Corp of engineers, and fairly well maintained. The sites are fairly large and vary from mostly shaded to full sun. All sights have access to the lake, but this campground also has a day use area with a beachy type area if you find your site to rocky, or mucky.
RangerIf you’re into birding, this is a great spot. The campground is located on West Point Lake, where bald eagles soar. There are also two parks very close by that are for ideal bird watchng, even in the winter, where a variety of migratory species congregate! Here is a link to the lake's birding page.
Campsites on the water’s edge provides easy access for swimming, fishing and kayaking, but camping in the fall on the hill with a deck overlooking the lake provides beautiful views of the lake.

GuideMy favorite spots are 115 & 116. They are next to the restroom, and the Go doesn’t have one, and they are secluded in a private cove. They lock the gate at 10, sharp, and tend to have some trouble with sewerage during rainy seasons.
