The inviting waters of Wheeler Lake surround this KOA, perched on a peninsula and dotted with native trees. The campground makes the most of its enviable setting, with sites overlooking the water, right along the waterfront and tucked among the shade trees. Thanks to the campground's own boat ramp, it's easy to get out on the lake for a carefree day of fishing, water-skiing or exploring the TVA chain of lakes. A sandy beach welcomes swimmers, and there's plenty of space for strolling and bird-watching. Rent a kayak, a canoe or a bike (child/adult sizes) to explore the lakeshore or campground.

    Older campgrounds

It’s a large campground with a lot of full time campers on site. Nice lake at 102 sq acres in size. Did have an issue that most sites are only 50 or 30amp hookups only, so I had to borrow a 30 to 120 adapter. The hiking trails were closed which sucked since I was looking forward to a hike with the dog. They are building a new pool. Good luck getting a lakeside site since I was told only 8 are available and are full most of the time.

    Nice stop on rainy night

Stopped at Pickwick Landing SP on a trip West to the Ozark National River. Nice campground but a little worn around the edges. Campground was mostly empty. We were in site 30, and the only people in that loop on a Friday night. They had recently had a lot of rain, and it rained most of the night. But it didn’t bother us. The asphalt on some of the roads was breaking up making for a rough road. But the campsite was large and mostly level. The bathrooms and showers were modern and well maintained. It is only 20 minutes from Shiloh National Battlefield Park which is worth the visit. We only stayed one night. Also- be sure to visit the Catfish Farm Restaurant. Smoked catfish is outstanding!

    Great

We will be back in the fall for an extended weekend trip. Staff was super friendly and helpful helping us find ice cream during a storm rolling thru. The site we had was up hill facing the lake which worked out with a small trailer.

    Older campgrounds

Stayed here for two nights. The site we booked was way too close to the restrooms, so we asked for a different location. The staff was great and let us pick a spot to change to. Lots of wildlife that comes out at dark looking for free food!

    Quick night stay

Ended up at this location after a crappy night in Alabama. It was very clean nice location. Very nice Mississippi State Park Campground. All the staff were very friendly and Gary was a great guy that we chatted with for a bit after checking in. Restrooms were clean and air conditioned. Family type campgrounds with friendly happy campers. We will be back a lot more in the future.

    Spaced out sites

Older campsite some improvements needed in the parking locations. Nice quiet, camping plenty of trees great for the dogs. Watching the squirrels chasing their nuts. We did have a raccoon jump on top of the RV at 1am and I think the wife shit herself! Write that down….

    Needs TLC

The campground is quite large with lots of things to explore. A lot of the roads, especially around the campsites were in need of repair. I had full hookup with 30 amp service, though not all of the sites have sewer. All of the lakeside sites are taken up by resident campers (of which there are a lot). I had absolutely no cell service through Verizon and my T-Mobile 5g internet had no reception either (even with a booster). Luckily, I was able to rely on my Starlink. A lot of the buildings looked like they had seen better days, but were maintained as well as they could be. Staff were nice and pleasant. Meriwether Lewis death/gravesite was nearby and interesting to check out. Not a whole lot else to do in the area. There is a low bridge (11ft) that you need to pass under to get onto the Natchez Trace Parkway. If you can’t fit, you have to take Napier road north several miles. There is a wal-mart in town about 20 or so minutes away.

    A beautiful great location

So many bad reviews for this site. Complainers!! Yes big hills and horrible roads in the park, but your in the sticks, sooo.... Plenty level spots. Some Sites are full and some are partial hook-ups. Plenty spots w easy access and plenty not so easy. Wifi is available to purchase $25 for the week, no issues thus far. Beautiful location. Natchez Trace Pkwy has plenty to learn and explore!!! Cute, lively little towns nearby that have kept up that old town look with awesome shops! In Hohenwald there is an elephant sanctuary. It has a location in town to teach about that sanctuary (No elephants are kept there)

Dismals Canyon Cabins and Primitive Campsites

    Cabins are nice but expensive

Located in Northwest Alabama, not far from the Sipsey Wilderness, Dismals Canyon offers an unparalleled camping experience that stands out in the state. While it may lean toward the higher end in terms of cost, the memories you create during a special weekend getaway here are absolutely worth it. During our most recent visit, we chose to stay in one of the cozy cabins, but the campgrounds also present an excellent lodging option. These cabins feature a generously sized kitchen, a warm and inviting living room complete with a fireplace, and two comfortable bedrooms. Outside, there are ample spaces perfect for relaxation and al fresco dining. The campgrounds are situated just across the street from the rest of the park and require a short stroll to reach. They offer a variety of camping choices, each with its unique appeal. For more detailed information about these options, you can refer to their website. A standout experience during our stay was embarking on the night hike the first evening we arrived. This adventure allowed us to explore the canyon in the darkness before immersing ourselves in its beauty during daylight hours. We were fortunate enough to enjoy a private tour on a Friday night and were treated to a mesmerizing display of glow worms, which call this canyon home. While the trails within Dismals Canyon may not be particularly lengthy, you'll find yourself utterly captivated by the allure of the surroundings. Be sure to allocate a full day to fully explore and lose yourself in the canyon's enchantment. In summary, Dismals Canyon delivers a camping experience like no other in Northwest Alabama, close to the Sipsey Wilderness. Whether you opt for the cozy cabins or the campgrounds, you'll be treated to a remarkable getaway. Don't pass up the opportunity to embark on a night hike to witness the canyon's beauty illuminated by the glow worms. With its captivating charm, Dismals Canyon guarantees cherished memories.

Nice park on the Tennessee River

We camped here for a weekend. There are actually 2 different campgrounds. We stayed at the one with with electric hook ups. The campsite also had a fire pit, lantern pole, and picnic bench. The sites are spacious and not too close together. The bathhouse was very clean. The showers are separate but in the same building. They are a little outdated but had a good water pressure. There is also a little check in booth where you can purchase firewood, ice, and other little things. From the campground you can start hike a 2.8 mile loop on the water. We also stopped at the lodge for dinner one night. It was very nice and the food was good. If you wanna do anything in the water, we saw a sign for a kayak and boat rental. If you bring your own, the park has a nice marina. If you don't feel like cooking, there are nice places around to check out. The dam is very impressive and we saw a lot of people fishing. The park has something for everybody to do and we enjoyed out weekend here.

    Nice and secluded

Beautiful campsite surround trees. Very quiet and secluded. There is water and electric hookups at each site and a dump station on the grounds as you leave. This was a very clean and safe campground. I loved being away from everything and in nature. Lots of trails to explore.

Rich with wildlife, quiet human activity

Shaded, private showers, water and electric hookups, tent friendly, and wildlife-fanatic friendly. Though it is his and gets sweaty at night so bring a fan and appropriate sleeping gear if you'll be tent camping. The grounds are well shaded and comfortable so you don't cook during the day. At night you can indulge in the rich atmosphere of southern cicadas and crickets backdropping owls and coyotes (don't worry! Coyotes are scared of people, they just sound a little jarring when you first hear them yipping). Really nice playground next to the bathrooms.

    Nice Lake View...but

    PROS

We were able to reserve 368 days prior to arrival

Very friendly and helpful check-in clerk

Fantastic view of the lake from site 45

Mostly quiet except for campground party animals until 3am!

    Concrete parking pad

    BBQ grill

Fire ring constructed of concrete pavers

    Coin-operated washers/dryers in shower/toilet facility

Small playground, pool and mini-golf course

Good jumping off point for Shiloh Battlefield

    CONS

Campsite 45 was full of litter…cigarettes butts, bones, bottle caps, pieces of chalk, straws, melted soda bottles…just nasty

Fire ring made of concrete pavers full of ash and trash upon arrival…again nasty Pedestal BBQ grill full of trash and ash upon arrival…more nastiness

Campers ignored basic rules/courtesy/respect such as keeping dogs on leash and walking through occupied campsites at anytime. One camper walking through our site complained to us our chairs on our site were in THEIR way.

    No senior discount

    Narrow site

    Site 45 not level

    Site 45 mostly fun sun

Basically we didn't experience any of the campground rules being enforced so obviously there is no management oversight at this State Park

Never saw a park ranger drive through the campground (Saturday-Monday)

Never saw a camp host or a campsite for a camp host

    Campground quiet hours not enforced

Posted "No Swimming” from campsites along lake, but that didn’t stop a sole and no one enforced it

Concrete picnic table at end of parking pad, so at the bumper of the camper

Sites very close to each other with no vegetation between sites, so no privacy what so ever

Street lights throughout campground, so not dark sky friendly

Small playground, pool and mini-golf course not walkable from campground

Trash dumpsters outside of campground…not walkable

Twisty, steep and narrow roadway into campsite...not for novice rig drivers

Due to short campsites, tow vehicles had to be creative with parking, sometimes blocking most of the campground road, again no enforcement efforts

    No WiFi

    1 bar Verizon

    Joe Wheeler is open

Basically there are two sections to this park. The newer section is very big rig orientated. Having been rebuilt due to hurricane, wide roomy sites well spaced, but not a tree in site. All sites both old & new are full hook up. The older section is very, very tight and not a one very level. The older section is fully treed, which makes things even tighter.

Good ATT & Verizon cell service. No wifi in campgrounds Not my first choice, bu it worked.
