Lathrop State Park, Colorado's first state park, holds Yucca Campground on the western edge of Walsenburg, where sites are spread across open terrain with sightlines toward the Spanish Peaks to the southwest. The campground runs year-round and accommodates both tents and RVs up to 50 feet, with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer available. Sites are spaced generously, though finding a flat tent pad can take some effort, and wind is a recurring factor, particularly at night. Campers close to the highway have noted road noise as a real consideration when choosing a site.
Water access is a draw here. Martin Lake sits within walking distance of the campground and supports fishing, swimming, and non-motorized and motorized watercraft. The Hogback Trail and additional hiking routes run through the park. A swim beach is available during warmer months. Electric hookup sites fill fast, so booking early matters if that's a priority.
Facilities at Yucca are basic. The campground has vault toilets rather than flush restrooms; showers are located at the adjacent Lathrop State Park Campground in the Pinon area and require a fee. Bethany S. notes the pit toilet is "basically clean and without odor," though the units are low-profile. Site fees start at $28 plus a $9 park entrance fee. Those planning a longer stay or comparing options can browse places to camp near Walsenburg to see what else is in the area. Reserve early for summer weekends, and bring tent stakes rated for wind.
Description
Camping opportunities abound at Lathrop. Lathrop’s two campgrounds have 103 sites that can accommodate motor homes, trailers and tents, and offer either a basic or improved camping experience. Improved Sites provide 20/30/50 amp electricity at the site, but do not provide water or sewer hookups. Piñon Campground is ideal for large camping units.
