Thirteen miles southeast of Fort Sumner, Pecos Campground sits within Sumner Lake State Park on the shores of a desert reservoir. The campground accommodates RVs up to 66 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections, though some sites present challenges with hookup spacing that may require longer hoses and cords.
Sites feature covered picnic tables and fire rings, with several offering three-sided adobe structures that provide wind protection and additional shade. The gravel sites are generally level with ample spacing between neighbors. Steel trash cans at each site get emptied twice daily by park rangers. A bathhouse serves the campground, though it requires a walk uphill from lakeside sites. Cell service varies by carrier, with reviewers reporting three bars of Verizon and two bars of AT&T from different locations.
The lake provides swimming and fishing opportunities, though evening hours bring mosquitoes and gnats near the water. Afternoon winds are common but typically subside by evening. Wildlife includes wild turkeys that wander through the campground, and campers should watch for rattlesnakes, scorpions, and tarantulas in this desert environment. Debbie J. notes the area "is super dark at night and awesome for stargazing."
The campground works well for RV travelers needing full hookups and those wanting lake access, with reservations available through New Mexico State Parks.
