Camping near Fort Sumner, New Mexico centers around several lake-based recreation areas and small local parks in this eastern New Mexico region. Sumner Lake State Park, located about 15 miles northwest of town, features multiple campgrounds including Pecos, Mesquite, and East Side, all offering both tent and RV camping options. Closer to town, Bosque Redondo Park provides free primitive camping with basic amenities near a small fishing pond. The area's historical significance as the site of Billy the Kid's burial place and the Bosque Redondo Memorial adds cultural context to the camping experience. Valley View RV Park in Fort Sumner offers year-round accommodations for those seeking full hookups within town limits.

The desert climate creates distinct camping conditions throughout the year. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F, while winters can bring freezing temperatures, especially at night. Campers report consistent wind across the region, requiring secure tent stakes and proper RV stabilization. Most state park campgrounds require reservations through the New Mexico State Parks reservation system, while Bosque Redondo Park operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Water levels at Sumner Lake fluctuate seasonally and have been reported as low in recent years. Insect activity increases at dusk, particularly at lakeside sites where gnats can be problematic during warmer months.

Camping options vary in amenities and accessibility. State park campgrounds provide electric hookups, water access, and shower facilities, though some bathrooms close during winter months due to freezing conditions. Primitive areas near the lakeshore offer more seclusion but fewer amenities. According to reviews, the night sky viewing is exceptional throughout the area due to minimal light pollution. Wildlife sightings are common, with campers noting turkeys, coyotes, and various desert species. One visitor mentioned, "Be careful of rattlesnakes, scorpions, and tarantulas. This area is also cougar country." The rocky terrain at many sites can make tent setup challenging, with another camper noting that "a lot of the spots are extremely rocky and just full of gravel."

Rocky Point Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

Worth the detour off Rt. 66

Like so many others, we are traveling rt 66 this summer. We needed a break from the highway parking lot campgrounds and came up here, it’s lovely and almost empty on a Wednesday night. Cleaner functional restrooms, pull through and back in, some covered picnic tables, electric and basic.

Los Tanos Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

      No reception

Campgrounds come with a picnic table, fire pit, and open space to throw a tent. There’s no running water. There is a restroom Porta potty style.

No reception. SOS area. There were no branches for starting a fire. Bring your own firewood if you want a fire.

      Bosque Redondo Park

      Very peaceful

Really enjoyed our stay. Not too many people and the locals that come out to enjoy are very respectful and quiet, even the ones that came on atv's.

      Get hidden gem!

So happy to have found this park. No hookups but sites have picnic tables and BBQ grill. Only 3 others when we were here. Best part, it's free!

Rocky Point Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

Great campground, clean bathrooms, beautiful lake

Santa Rosa Lake is a little gem in the middle of the New Mexican desert! Lake is stunning and has clear clean lovely water. It seems that most use the lake for boating and fishing, we saw some jet skis as well. However you can absolutely swim! Water was cold and perfect for a hot day.

Campground is well kept, with ample spots. It was pretty busy but we had no problem booking a day before. Bathrooms are clean and showers were great! They operate by button and each press is about a minute of water. It warmed up quickly and I love the sustainable way of conserving water.

Staff was very friendly and attentive. It was a little buggy at sunset but otherwise very lovely!

Rocky Point Campground — Santa Rosa Lake State Park

      Nice quiet sites

Stayed one really quiet night. Only 2 other sites in B loop were occupied. $23.50 w/fee for out of state non-electric site. A loop is all electric and B is non. An assortment of pull thru and back-in sites. Clean bathrooms and 1 bar Verizon, sufficient to book and some other online tasks

      Love's RV Hookup-Santa Rosa NM 285

      Does the Job

Overnight spots at truck entrance. Announcements to truckers quite loud. Put on the fan and ear buds and slept like a baby. Friendly staff. Clean bathrooms. Felt safe. Lots of other overnighters.

      Well maintained, lovely bathrooms

I enjoyed my stay here. I camped in winter and it was so nice to have a bathroom with heat and flushing toilets.

My spot was clean and the hosts were nice.
