Wildlife enthusiasts will find Highland State Recreation Area offers both forested camping sites and access to a no-wake lake for fishing and paddling. The rustic campground sits within Highland State Recreation Area, managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources year-round. Two paved sites provide ADA accessibility, while the remaining sites accommodate RVs up to 45 feet.
Campers report the sites feel private and spacious, with running water, outhouses, and a dumpster available. Most sites lack tree cover, so expect limited shade during sunny days. The campground maintains a quiet atmosphere that appeals to families and groups seeking an unplugged experience. Cell service varies throughout the area.
"Extra large camp sites, lots of room for the kids to run around," notes Jennifer H.. The park features extensive trail systems for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Wildlife sightings include wild turkeys, and the lake provides opportunities for swimming and fishing. Historical remnants of the Ford family's 1930s summer retreat, Haven Hill, remain accessible via woodland trails.
For additional camping options, consider Pontiac Lake Recreation Area about five miles northeast, which offers a different lake setting and amenities.
