Water enthusiasts can paddle directly from four waterfront canoe sites at Hopeville Pond State Park Campground, where Hopeville Pond connects to the Pachaug River system. The campground operates seasonally from late May through early September, offering 82 sites across multiple loops plus a rental cabin. Sites range from primitive tent spots to full hookup options accommodating RVs up to 35 feet.
The main camping area spreads across loops A through F, with most sites backing up to each other in forested settings. Loop F provides more separation from the water but offers greater privacy between sites, while several sites in loops C and E sit directly on the water. Jason S. notes the canoe sites are "tent only" and require a short walk from parking, but "sites CN02, CN03 and CN04 have direct waterfront on the pond."
A large indoor bathhouse serves the main camping area with hot water and free showers, while vault toilets serve the canoe sites. The pond supports fishing for large fish among lily pads and submerged timber, though weedless rigs work best. An eight-mile paddle route extends south to Pachaug Pond via the river. Campers can also find places to camp around Hopeville Pond State Park for extended stays in the region.
Description
Fish, swim, or camp under an old growth forest canopy on the serene shores of Hopeville Pond, an amazing spot for a tranquil day on the water. Once a major fishing ground for the Mohegan Indians and home to successful woolen mill industry, local history intersects with the park’s natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. The most popular activities center around the placid waters of Hopeville Pond, an impoundment of the Pachaug River.
