The sound of waves carries up from the bluffs at El Capitán State Beach Campground, but so does the hum of Highway 101 and the rumble of passing trains. That trade-off defines the experience here: a coastal state park campground with genuine ocean access and views, set close enough to infrastructure that noise is a real factor, especially at night. Earplugs are worth packing.
Site selection matters considerably at this campground. Reviewers consistently point to the bluff-side sites in the 84-to-110 range as the most sought-after, with several noting that sites 99, 101, 103, and 105 carry ocean views and tend to be the largest and most level. Sites on the inland side sit closer to the train corridor and highway, where noise is more pronounced. Shade is limited across most of the campground. As one reviewer put it, Venice G. noted that site 86 had trees "shaded for most of the day," but that kind of coverage is the exception rather than the rule.
The beach itself is a short walk down from the bluffs, though the shoreline is rocky in places and better suited to tide pooling than swimming. Dolphins and seals are commonly spotted from the cliffs. A bluff-top path connects toward Refugio State Beach to the west, though erosion has closed a portion of the route. Hot showers and clean restrooms are available on-site, and firewood can be purchased at the campground. The Middle Section (Sites 29-91) & Anza Group) - El Capitan State Beach section covers the bulk of the inland loop.
Reservations are essential, particularly for summer weekends. The booking window fills fast, and ocean-view sites go first. Campers willing to check for cancellations in the weeks leading up to their trip sometimes find openings. The campground accommodates RVs up to 42 feet and includes group sites, which can generate noise late into the evening if you're camped nearby. Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara sits just to the northwest and provides an alternative for RV campers wanting full hookups, while El Capitan Canyon to the north offers a different style of accommodation for those who want to stay in the same corridor without the state park setup.
