Hiking the Ritchey Creek trail system, riding bikes to wineries along vineyard-lined lanes, and watching frogs gather near the creek at night are among the activities that bring campers back to Ritchey Creek Campground inside Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. The campground sits at the northern end of Napa Valley near Calistoga, which means winery visits and restaurant dinners are genuinely within reach without paying Napa hotel rates. A shuttle reportedly stops at the park to carry visitors into town, a useful detail for anyone planning a wine-tasting day without driving afterward.
Sites are mostly shaded by oaks and madrone, which reviewers note helps considerably in warmer months given the absence of electrical hookups. The ground is volcanic rock and compacted dirt, and in dry conditions the soil turns to a fine dust that coats gear, feet, and sandals. Tent campers should be aware that staking can be difficult in the hardpan. Poison oak is present throughout, and multiple reviewers flag it as something to watch carefully, especially with children. The creek nearby draws wildlife, including turkeys at dawn and frogs after dark.
"It's very quiet and woodsy," notes Jeanna J., who also found the site screening effective enough that neighboring campers were not visible. Weekends tend to fill up. Weekday visits draw noticeably smaller crowds, making midweek stays a practical choice for anyone wanting more elbow room. The park also has Valley Yurts - Bothe-Napa Valley State Park and Cabin Colony - Bothe-Napa Valley State Park for campers who prefer a roof overhead.
Access is walk-in, and the road into the campground is narrow with tricky pull-ins. RVs up to 31 feet are accommodated, though some sites are unlevel and backing in can require multiple attempts. One reviewer with a 20-foot trailer needed three tries. Google Maps has reportedly misdirected visitors, so using the park's listed street address directly is worth doing before departure. Showers require quarters beyond the nightly fee, currently $43, and reservations are available year-round.
Nathaniel S. makes a case that winter or early spring is now the most rewarding time to visit: creeks run, campfires are permitted, and the vegetation is at its greenest. This campground makes the most sense for tent campers and smaller RV rigs who want a base for exploring Napa Valley without the cost of lodging in town.
