Roughly three miles up a dirt road outside Dayton, Tongue River Campground sits in a narrow canyon within the Amsden Creek Wildlife Habitat Management Area, where the Tongue River runs close enough to most sites that campers can hear it from their tents. The road is in reasonable shape for most of the season, though it narrows considerably toward the end, and larger rigs should claim one of the first two sites to avoid a difficult turnaround. Only seven sites are available here. That small count means the campground fills on summer weekends, and arriving early matters.
Water access is the defining feature. Several sites sit directly alongside the river, and campers regularly use it for swimming and wading with dogs and kids. Anglers will find miles of fishable water within walking distance. The canyon walls give the area a distinct character, with rock climbing and bouldering accessible from the same road that serves the campground. A hiking trail begins at the road's end, which also means day-use traffic from hikers passing through on busy days, adding some dust and movement to what is otherwise a low-key spot.
Amenities are minimal but functional: a pit toilet, fire rings with flip-up grills at most sites, and bear boxes and picnic tables at select sites. Cell service is listed as available. "The river is enjoyable to listen to," notes Matt T., and that detail alone keeps campers returning. The campground is free to use, making it a practical overnight stop for travelers moving through northern Wyoming who want a riverside site without a reservation system.
