Meadow Camp on Forest Road 231

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Free dispersed camping along Forest Road 231 in Bighorn National Forest puts campers in a meadow setting with multiple site options, though the road gets rocky. Meadow-edge sites fill quickly with RVs and fifth-wheelers, even on weekdays. Driving further in on the rougher track opens up more space, but high clearance and four-wheel drive help. Elk have been spotted at the forest perimeter in the evenings. The campground suits self-sufficient rigs well, with reviewers noting strong Starlink connectivity and good solar exposure. A small creek runs past the meadow. No developed facilities are mentioned in available reports.

So nice, I stayed another night

Easy to find, but most of the meadow sites on the fringes were taken up by RVs. Much to choose from if you take the rocky road. I have a 4x with clearance so I drove in a ways to get some space. Much to choose from if you drive a ways. Deer came to visit during the day. Rainstorm rolled in on my first night so it was pretty chilly. But next day was beautiful. I would come back again.

Beautiful meadow with Elk

Easy access off Hwy 14. Was busier than expected with lots of 5th wheelers but spaced out enough that we had privacy. There was only a small creek out past the meadow.

During the evening, we saw a large herd of Elk on the forest perimeter.
