Anglers and water enthusiasts will find plenty to explore at Big Eau Pleine Park Campground, where 106 sites spread across two units on a peninsula jutting into the Big Eau Pleine Flowage. Marathon County operates this 1,450-acre park with mixed hardwoods and direct water access through three boat launches.
The campground divides into West and South units, with about 60 sites offering electric hookups. Sites range from $18 for non-electric without lake views to $23 for lakefront electric sites. "Sites have a little bit of trees between for privacy," notes Nicole H., though campers consistently mention the family-friendly atmosphere during peak season. The handicap-accessible site near restrooms provides extra space for both RVs and tents.
Twelve miles of trails wind through the wooded peninsula for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park features a disc golf course, swimming beach, and multiple fishing spots near the entrance and boat launches. Walter W. found "lots of wildlife" along the trails, while fishing remains popular despite seasonal algae affecting water quality. Firewood permits cost extra and are only sold between 8am-8pm daily.
Water conditions vary throughout the season, with green algae blooms affecting swimming and fishing quality during warmer months. The campground operates from May 2 through October 31, with reservations available. Cell service reaches most sites, with Verizon users reporting three bars of LTE coverage. Campers exploring the region can find campgrounds near Mosinee for additional options.
The concrete restrooms double as weather shelters during storms, and the group site includes covered picnic areas with electric hookups for larger gatherings.
