Fishing, hiking, kayaking, and swimming all factor into a stay at Sand Springs Campground, a forested private campground outside Morgantown, West Virginia, where the surrounding terrain gives campers direct access to outdoor recreation without driving far. Sites are notably spacious, with one reviewer noting roughly 60 feet of separation between neighbors, and large rock fire rings at every site accommodate good-sized groups. The campground is within a short distance of Chestnut Ridge Regional Park, which has pond swimming and seasonal folk music, and Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground sits nearby for those wanting trails and a historic iron furnace.
The road in deserves attention. Access runs about three miles from the interstate on narrow roads, and multiple reviewers flag the approach as tricky, particularly for larger rigs backing into tree-lined sites. RVs up to 45 feet are accommodated with full hookups, water, and sewer, but tight maneuvering is a real factor. The gravel within the sites can also make leveling a challenge.
Weekends and holiday periods tend to fill up fast, especially football weekends given the campground's proximity to Morgantown. Off-season visits offer more solitude. Cell coverage runs decent to workable on AT&T and T-Mobile. As Jeffrey L. puts it: "Gets some crazy fog but lot of parks and trails close by." The bathrooms are older but consistently described as clean. Campers who want a forested base with full amenities and regional recreation close at hand will find Sand Springs worth a look.
