Double C Horsemans Camp in Camp Creek State Park provides equestrian-specific camping within the main park system. Located in the Blue Jay Campground section, this horse camp requires registration at the main office where staff provide a key for access beyond the locked gate. The campground features primitive sites along a creek with pit toilets available. Horse owners should note that the park includes extensive horse trails throughout the property, with multiple waterfalls accessible from the camping areas. Camp Creek offers a mix of wooded terrain and stream access, making it suitable for both horse camping and trail riding throughout the season.

Kinderhook Horse Trail in Ohio, approximately 65 miles from Cedarville, offers basic facilities for equestrian campers with big-rig friendly access and primitive accommodations. The trailhead provides access to dedicated bridle paths through the Wayne National Forest. Toilet facilities are available but no water hookups or electric connections for campers with horse trailers. The trails connect to a broader network of riding opportunities throughout the forest. Regular trail maintenance keeps routes accessible for horses year-round, though seasonal conditions affect trail quality after heavy rainfall. Riders should bring sufficient water for horses, as drinking water is not provided at these horse campgrounds.

      Holly River State Park Campground

It's a beautiful, clean place with incredible staff

This review is for the primitive boondockers like myself. It's a very established campground, full amenities, restaurant, gift shop, the works. I thought we would find a primitive campground with much more privacy based on the details and reviews of the grounds. The primitive camping spots are all in view of each other down a long stretch of dirt road. They're very clean and come with trash cans at each sight, which was nice. We were the only tent campers so it was enjoyable, but I don't know if I would have had the same experience if there were a lot of campers. I think that's a very important and left out detail about this location for the people who enjoy a more private environment. I'm still very happy with my stay, and the staff is absolutely WONDERFUL. They're all so kind and went out of their way to provide us with information when we had questions they didn't know the answer to, everyone who works there is a delight. 25$ a night felt a little much to sleep in our tent, but the showers, clean bathrooms, and care put into the property made it worth it. Waterfalls nearby as well. I'd stay again.

Don’t take the short trip in

Don’t follow the shortest trip using GPS it’ll take you on an old goat path to get here. But back to the campground it’s a really good location. Very very rural out in the middle of nowhere campsites are spaced. Adequately with plenty of shade several small playgrounds in each loop for the kids very quiet family oriented place. This place is so far out in the middle of nowhere they have to pipe the sunshine in.

      Camp Creek State Park Campground

      Nice and quiet campground

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Camp Creek State Park Campground. We had an electric only site along the creek, but they have sites with electric and water and sites with full hookup. It was level and we liked hearing the small creek flowing. We found several good places to hike with access in the campground and two nice waterfalls. The campground was not accessible the Camp Creek Road turnoff from I-77 because the exit was closed coming from the south for roadwork. Therefore, we had to get off near Princeton and the road was quite curvy and slow going for about 15 miles. Going back south was no problem getting on I-77. Hopefully the road work will be completed soon. We enjoyed enough that we would go back again, especially as a stop over on a longer trip.

      Almost empty

This was a gem of a park to find. There is hardly anyone here and you have your pick pretty much of the camping spots. The spots are mostly level and there are two bath houses onsite. The bathrooms are pretty basic but they have hot water and so far I’ve had them mostly to myself. And it’s only $30 a night.

      Cranberry River Sites NF Campground

Another amazing place to camp in West Virginia

Cranberry River dispersed camping along Forest Road 76 offers quiet, scenic, riverside primitive campsites with excellent fishing and easy access to the surrounding wilderness. We stayed a couple of nights at Site 8 and had great river access with only a small amount of road traffic. There were campers at about five other sites during our stay, but it still felt peaceful and spread out. With inexpensive sites spaced along roughly five miles of road, this is a great area to camp. Roads like this in West Virginia are home to some of my favorite campsites, and we will definitely be back.

      Kinderhook Horse Trail

Quiet, small spot, perfect for a short camping trip.

There are two small camping spots with picnic tables. The vault toilet here is very clean and even had a lockable door. There is also drinkable water from a city water hand pump. Very quiet at night, except for a handful of cars that might drive through or spend the night. I spent two weeks here and had zero issues with people being loud or causing a ruckus. As far as fire wood, you can walk around and pick up all the downed wood you’d like, but I’d recommend bringing some wood with you if it’s rained in the last few days. Plenty of space to park. Gas stations, fast food, and dollar general are all within 10 mins. Verizon signal - 1/2 bars ATT signal - 2/3 bars

      Kinderhook Horse Trail

      Nice Site, Not Private

The site itself is quite nice, with access to toilets and picnic tables. However, it also seems to be a spot locals visit quite a bit. I’ve had two cars drive in after sunset who have just sat around for a bit then left. I would not recommend this site if you are traveling solo (Like I am).

    Guide to Cedarville

Equestrian camping options dot the Wayne National Forest region near Cedarville, West Virginia. The Appalachian plateau terrain features mixed hardwood forests at elevations between 1,000-3,000 feet, creating moderate temperatures even in summer. Most horse campgrounds in this area maintain accessibility from April through October, with primitive facilities being the standard at trailheads.

    What to do

Trail riding networks: Camp Creek State Park offers extensive trail systems with multiple difficulty levels. As one visitor notes, "There are several trails available. Great sleeping with the Laurel Fork running right by the sites. Perfect if you have children. There is a pool and other activities available" at Holly River State Park Campground.

Waterfall exploration: Access multiple cascades within short hiking or riding distances. At Camp Creek, one camper advises, "This is a very beautiful campground!! Very peaceful and the staff are very friendly. We stayed at Blue Jay tent site 3. The reason for the warning is that if you visit Campbell falls, BEWARE it is extremely slippery."

Fishing opportunities: Numerous streams and small lakes provide fishing access throughout the region. At Elk River Camp and RV Park, "The park is right on the beautiful Elk River where you can swim, float or kayak."

    What campers like

Secluded riverside sites: Creek-side camping provides natural white noise and recreation options. At Kumbrabow State Forest, visitors appreciate "Beautiful tent sites along the creek! I was there in late summer, but I plan to return in late spring when the rhododendrons would be in bloom."

Historical features: Some campgrounds preserve industrial heritage elements. One reviewer described discovering "a rock wall. Old and obviously precisely laid by man some time ago...but no indication why or when...and everywhere you turned was thick, dense forest" while exploring trails near Holly River State Park.

Wildlife viewing: Dawn and dusk provide opportunities to spot deer, turkey and small mammals. The Cranberry River Sites offer "beautiful waterfalls like big ruff and the ducks are so colorful like no other. Been going for 3 years now and always an awesome getaway."

    What you should know

Weather considerations: The region receives significant rainfall year-round. One camper at Holly River noted, "We spent a few days here. Plenty of camp sites that have electric hookups. Stay near the water or further away. Every morning and every night it rained which made it difficult to swim and fish. The park workers said this is common year round."

Trail conditions: Maintenance varies throughout the season, particularly on equestrian routes. At Kinderhook Horse Trail, a visitor observed, "The Kinderhook trail was overgrown. The Paw Paw trail on the other hand was very smooth, dry and wide. The trail leads to the top of the hill."

Site selection: Reserve specific sites when possible based on rig size and needs. At Mountwood Park Family Campground, "Some of the electric hookups had damage but being able to choose your spot upon arrival helped. Seemed a lot like a hidden gem and I definitely recommend. FYI. Most of the sites seemed small so it might be best for smaller setups."

    Tips for camping with families

Beginner-friendly trails: Several campgrounds offer shorter loops suitable for young riders. At Holly River State Park, "This campground has plenty to offer for the whole family. The privacy of each site varies, on the weekends it is very busy though. They have basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, and a pool for campers to enjoy."

Water play options: Creeks and small cascades provide safe wading areas during summer. Near Mountwood Park Family Campground, "Across the street, the park portion of this campground has a dog park, playground, historical site and pond for fishing."

Wildlife education: Many areas post information about local species and habitat. At Cranberry River Sites, one visitor warns, "One thing to remember is always hang your food at night. Bears will come in and make themselves at home! Lol."

    Tips from RVers

Access considerations: Many horse campgrounds have restricted access points. For Kumbrabow State Forest, visitors warn about "Access is by about 6 miles of dirt/rock road."

Hookup limitations: Most equestrian sites offer minimal services. At Elk River Camp and RV Park, "Mix of wonderful water and electric sites with ok full hookups. Beautiful river spots. The owner was wonderful. No laundry, showers or wifi. The price was $40 a night full hookups."

Seasonal planning: Spring and fall offer more comfortable temperatures. One Camp Creek visitor reported, "We stayed 3 nights here, enjoyed it very much even though the power was out due to Hurricane Helene's wrath. Two nice waterfalls to walk or bike to, the campsites are spread out fairly well, and it's quiet."
