Quiet nights come easily on Derby Road, where free dispersed sites are scattered across open hillsides inside Wenatchee National Forest near Peshastin. This is dry, self-sufficient camping with no developed facilities, no water sources, and no fee. Campers drive in along Derby Road and continue onto NF7400 to find the better sites, which open up well past the lower canyon where private property and dense thicket limit options.
Road conditions matter here. The main Derby Road runs reasonably well, but the NF7400 spur introduces rougher terrain, including washed-out sections and embedded rock. A 2WD vehicle can reach some sites, but higher ground clearance and AWD or 4WD help considerably on the service roads. Sites sit just off the road, which means some road dust. Cell coverage is inconsistent: Verizon holds a usable signal while T-Mobile is unreliable. The area draws mountain bikers and dirt bike riders, so expect occasional activity on the roads.
Campers who push further up the road find open, elevated terrain with near-360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. Ashley V. notes "little to no water sources," so arriving with a full supply is essential. Watch for "no camping" signs on some pullouts, and check for posted burn restrictions in summer and fall since firewood is available but conditions change. The Xanadu Trailhead Dispersed, Wenatchee NF and Wenatchee NF Dispersed off FS 7401 are nearby alternatives if sites here are taken.
