Rustic cabin options in Prince William Forest Park include Goodwill Cabin, Cabin Camp 3, and Lichtman Camp 1, each offering basic accommodations with varying amenities. Goodwill Cabin and Cabin Camp 3 provide electric hookups but minimal other services, making them suitable for campers seeking a more primitive experience. "The staff at the camp store were nice and very accommodating," noted one visitor who appreciated the service at a nearby campground. Most cabins in the region have limited facilities, with guests typically responsible for bringing their own supplies and equipment.

While some campgrounds operate year-round, others open only during summer months. Prince William Forest Park cabins require advance reservations, with limited availability during peak season. Bull Run Regional Park and Pohick Bay Campground also offer cabin accommodations with more amenities, including nearby comfort stations with showers and toilets. According to one visitor, "We chose another spot that was available, however, we found out the first night that there is a boat area and bright light all night right behind us and the light came through the tent." Pet policies vary by location, with some parks prohibiting pets in cabins while others welcome them with restrictions.

Most cabins include basic furniture but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities are limited, with some providing only outdoor fire rings for cooking. Camp stores at larger facilities like Pohick Bay stock essentials including firewood, which cannot be gathered on-site. One visitor mentioned the camp store was "well stocked" and "obviously they cater to beginner and family camping." Nearby towns offer additional shopping options for groceries and supplies. Visitors staying at cabins should check specific amenity lists when booking as furnishing levels vary significantly between locations.

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Ramblin' Pines

      Weak WiFi

For $90 per night the WiFi should work better. Didn’t connect at all. Had to use the antenna pointed East to get local Baltimore news.

      Cherry Hill Park

      My All Time Favorite…so far

This park is top notch. The grounds are immaculate. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a lovely gift shop. We were in the 400 sites and it was nice and shady. Though you are close to highways I don’t recall hearing and noise. I love that they have shuttles to DC., walking trails and a large dog park. This is my all time favorite park so far and I need to go back.

      Washington DC / Capitol KOA

      Good location

Nice campground, maintained very well and clean. Laundry room and Propane fill on site so that was nice. RV Site was fairly level and easy to get into. Some sites are a bit close together and not long enough to keep your tow vehicle hooked up. A bit inconvenient if you’re only there for 1 night.

    Guide to Rose Hill

Cabin camping near Rose Hill, Virginia provides access to several parks with rustic overnight accommodations within 30-45 minutes of Washington DC. The region sits in Virginia's Piedmont area at elevations around 200-400 feet, experiencing hot, humid summers and mild winters with occasional snow. Forest cover throughout the area creates significant shade at most cabin sites, with summer highs regularly reaching 90°F from June through August.

    What to Do

Disc golf courses: Pohick Bay Regional Park features an 18-hole course through wooded terrain. "I'd recommend taking in a game of disc golf on their 18 hole course," notes Rachel L. who calls Pohick Bay "a hidden gem in the area."

Water activities: Multiple parks offer boating and fishing opportunities from spring through fall. "Boating in summer from kayaks to motorboats" is available at Pohick Bay Campground, according to Anne K., who also mentions the "Pirate's Cove waterpark is definitely a highlight in summer."

Wildlife observation: The region hosts diverse bird populations including bald eagles. "Eagles everywhere! Large clean sites. Great staff!" reports Kathie M. about her experience at Pohick Bay. Hiking trails throughout the parks provide additional wildlife viewing opportunities.

Historical sites: Several parks contain preserved structures from earlier eras. General Smallwood's mansion at Smallwood State Park offers seasonal access. Teresa K. notes, "There are hiking trials, but none are two extensive. The trails can be massively over grown at times making some inaccessible."

    What Campers Like

Privacy between sites: Many parks feature natural vegetation barriers. "Lots of vegetation between sites providing privacy from neighbors," reports Napunani about Little Bennett Campground, adding "Great night sky viewing as no lights what so ever in camping loops except for toilet/shower buildings."

Clean facilities: Most parks maintain their bathroom and shower facilities regularly. At Burke Lake Park, Alexis notes the park "has a great lake for fishing and boat rentals, a paved path to walk around the lake (about 5 miles) and a fantastic playground."

Family amenities: Several parks include playgrounds and recreational facilities. Ben G. at Pohick Bay appreciated that "they had a scavenger hunt for the kids going all weekend, they had an outdoor movie scheduled for Friday night, a campfire story time scheduled for Saturday night and crafts scheduled for Sunday morning."

Metro accessibility: Some campgrounds provide direct access to Washington DC. "Stayed here for 2w while visiting friends in Alexandria. Took me 25-30m to get there so you are far away from bustle of city but not so far that going in to enjoy breakfast or the sights is a feat," reports Josh J. about Cherry Hill Park.

    What You Should Know

Varying cabin quality: Cabin facilities range from extremely rustic to moderately comfortable. At Prince William Forest Park, Dan N. notes that Goodwill cabins "have beds with waterproof mattresses, closets, screen windows, and electricity, but no fans or AC (bring fans!!)."

Reservation requirements: Most cabins require advance booking, often with minimum stay requirements. "There is a 2-night minimum stay. Even mid-week. In APRIL for gosh sakes!" notes Stuart O. about Bull Run Regional Park.

Seasonal noise considerations: Some parks experience varied noise levels depending on season and day of week. Drew M. notes about Bull Run that "it is not quite. There is a shooting range in the park. It is on a flight path for DCA. And, I66 is not that far away."

Additional fees: County and regional parks often charge supplemental fees beyond base rates. "There are occupancy AND transaction fees that really add up if you're only there a few nights," mentions Stuart O. about Bull Run Regional Park cabins.

    Tips for Camping with Families

Activity planning: Parks often schedule family-oriented activities on weekends. "They informed us that they had a scavenger hunt for the kids going all weekend... an outdoor movie scheduled for Friday night, a campfire story time scheduled for Saturday night and crafts scheduled for Sunday morning," reports Ben G. at Bull Run Regional Park.

Cabin selection: Choose sites based on proximity to amenities. "We got a site on thr inner loop and it backed to the playground and the bathhouse. The site was spacious," notes Ben G. about his family's experience at Pohick Bay.

Swimming options: Not all parks permit young children in swimming facilities. Stephanie H. observed at Washington DC Capitol KOA: "I didnt like that non potty trained kids are not allowed to swim in their pool. Luckily we only have a 9 month old currently that isn't potty trained."

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer nature centers with programs. "There is also a discovery/nature center and art center in the day use area, both of which we really enjoyed," shares Jen V. about Smallwood State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Many cabin areas accommodate RVs with varying hookup options. At Washington DC Capitol KOA, Angie G. notes "Sites are close and need service. Sandy dirt covered. They could add gravel or grass and a plant or two near the sewer pipes to help."

Leveling challenges: Some sites require significant adjustment for level setup. Ray & Terri F. report that at Little Bennett Campground, "The sites are quiet, very spacious, level, and heavily wooded with 50A service, water and sewer hookup."

Connectivity issues: Cell and internet service varies significantly between parks. "AT&T 5 MB/s w/o booster(1 bar), 8 MB/s with it(2 bars). There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was descent using an external omni antenna," notes Ray & Terri F. about Little Bennett Campground.
